Bending, without bender?

Is there any way of going about bending tubing, without a bender and not actually kinking it?

Any advice would be awesome. I want to do some cage work on my truck but cant afford a bender. All I have is a torch and vice's.

i heard you can fill it with sand and tape off the ends that helps it from kinking

To build a cage.

Hell but no.

Depending on how many bends you need, it probably wouldn't cost much to have a shop do them for you all at once. You would obviously need to know quantity and angles but it's an option. Do you have a welder?

wabbit is right on the money... not gonna bend .120 dom with a vise and torch. well not nicely anyway :D

greencactus3 Sep 2, 2011 11:22 AM

for some things yes, for a cage, no way

x2 or is it 3? Nope your not gonna bend .120 dom without a hydraulic/pneumatic bender. Just isn't gonna happen.

I've seen a person use a conduit bender and a lot of heat to bend DOM. He was only doing a 90* angle bend so it wasn't much. It came out decent, I could not tell he didn't use a bender. If its just a couple of bends here or there then do what you have to do to make it work.

If your bending a lot of stuff, then it's a no brainer, get a real bender.

Trying to build an exo or cage without a bender...
...you'll have better luck nailing jello to a wall.

Ok thanks guys. and Yes, I have a welder. I just wondered if there was any "tricks" to doing it without. I'll look around for a shop locally.

It should read 'you'd have better luck nailing jello to a wall without ramen in it.' :hillbill:

I know a guy that builds his own dune buggies he uses three trees in his front yard to bend his tubing. Seriously!

Yes, so plant 3 trees in your front yard and wait a few years and you'll be good to go! :) lol! Just kidding.

Harbor Freight has got a bender for under a $100. A tubing bender is one of those things that is a good investment; when you need it, you NEED it! Nothing else will do. Not even a tree! lol!

HF sells a PIPE bender that is a POS. Tubing and pipe are NOT the same thing.

I didn't say I bought one. But they do have a 12 ton bottle jack bender. No idea if it works or not...
