Axle newb: swap Taco axle into an '82 truck
1982 Hilux, 22r, 4" lift, 33's -
I have read up on the 97 runner 3rd member install into a older hilux. Are the rear tacoma (v6/turbo axle) not an option on the older gen 1s?
I would rather just swap out an entire axle than cut into my current one. (or pay someone to do it for me)
Are the spring perches different? Width? As I have found a 97 tacoma axle, locked, 4:10 gears with 150,000k on it for $350 locally.
Thanks

tacoma axle will either be 3" or 4 1/2" wider than your current axle. I can only assume the spring perches are located differently. I would have to look it up to see what the width differences are on the leaf springs themselves. Also do you have 4:10 in your front already? 3.90, 4.10, 4.30, 4.38 should be an 82 options for the gearing. My info was taken from this page: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/

Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug
58" wide, '86-95 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug
56" wide, '79-95 2wd Trucks - 5 Lug
60.75" wide, '95.5-up Tacomas/4runners
66.75" wide, '93-98 T100 trucks
I am pretty sure the perches are different widths,

yes sir, I do have 4:10 up front. It appears there are some years with 4.30 and up .. I wouldn't mind a re gear up front either.
I just don't know enough about it but there are a lot of axles out there between the trucks, 4runners, land cruisers, etc that are elocked and it seems like one of them would be a close fit. Welding on some new perches is more desirable to me again than cutting into my old housing.
