97 transfer case out of a 4 runner and a 99 transfer case out of a tacoma

Are they the same or different?

Oh 3.4L with 5 speed

thank you!

I think it depends on whether theyre the same or not.
Lol
I think there were several different type of cases around then.
Full electronic control, lever control, and iirc the tri mode case too.

Well they are both 3.4L's and are both 5 speeds. I did read that 98 or 99 4 runners they started offering full time 4 wheel drive.

naww, pretty sure that came with the body style change... I.e a totally different 4Runner.

Consequently, I'd love to be wrong though.... Though I have never heard of a Full Time 4WD in a 95-02 4Runner.

Now the 2003 and up are another story. They have a lockable Thorsen center diff that can also be switched to High 2... SWEET!

nope, you're right.. but according to this: http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...-4runner-6.htm

see post #2 again.

two different transfer cases for the 99 4runner (canadian service manual)
VF2A - that would be the base
VF3am - that one had the one touch 4wd hi-lo feature
You would need wiring harness and the 4wd ecu for it to work.

As for the 99 taco - unable to (quickly) locate the model codes for the two different tcases however one does have that 4wd hi-lo feature. one small problem though, it was hooked to the auto on the taco. that suggusts to me that the 4wd ecu might not work by itself in a manual. The wiring diag for it suggust a 4wd ECU and a 4wd control ECU as well as minor inputs into the ECU. I strongly suspect that once the L4 signal for the hi-lo switch gets to the ECU, it tells the auto tranny and the engine to behave a particular way. No telling how this might react on a standard transmission even though the bolt pattern does appear to match up. you'll probably be able to bolt the thing on, but after that?

Feel free to let us know if you got it to work or not. You could likely wire up a series of switches to do the auto hi-lo as it's only a shifter motor in there. my concern would be how the vehicle's engine ecu and 4wd ecus behave after the fact.

< the tcases they had, to support Rix, appear to be different in the operation. VF3am appears to be brand new and only put on the 4skinner that year.>
