95 4Runner A340H Solenoids

Hey,

First off, this site has been a life saver when it comes to my new 4runner and trying to trouble shoot any problems I have had with it.

I was able to find a 95 4runner, 4x4, V6 (3vze), 146k miles, head gasket was replaced per Toyota at 111k, and in really clean condition for an awesome price. The guy selling it made it aware that he had some issues with the transmission and wasn't willing to pay for a replacement.

I had the same issue with my transmission as many others here have had. If starting in drive and pressing on the accelerator, my RPM's increase but my car just does not want to seem to go until I hit approx 3500 rpm, it then shifts and is fine after that. I also noticed that the O/D light will sometimes flash. It almost seems like it is slipping? Also, if I start by putting my 4Runner into L, and accelerate it does just fine as far as accelerating through that gear, shifts into 2nd, and into drive with no problems.

I ran the codes on my 4runner today and it came back with 63, which shows a fault in either the wiring from ECU to solenoid, ECU itself, or most commonly a faulty solenoid #2.

I have double checked fluid levels and fluid color and they seem fine. I have made the decision to go ahead and replace solenoid #2 as well as the transmission filter while I'm at it, the only problem is I am having a hard time finding the correct solenoid. There is a 3 pack offered on eBay for 49.95 but they all seem to be the same solenoid. Link here --> https://www.ebay.com/i/191576393426?chn=ps&dispItem=1

My questions are, would this be the correct solenoid for #2? Should I go ahead and replace the other 2 while I have the oil pain off, and is there anything else I should be aware of? Or are all 3 solenoids different model numbers and that is simply a 3 pack of a single solenoid? Any other suggestions as far as solenoids go?

Thanks ahead of time, like I said, this sight has been invaluable so far. Can't wait to lift it!

the two with black fittings are the 2 shift solenoids
the one with the silver fitting/oring is the lock up solenoids

Ah okay, yeah I was getting confused on the fact that there were 2 different types. I know that 1 and 3 are next to each other once the pan and filter are off. I also forgot to mention that I tested the resistance in ohms between the ECU and body ground for Solenoid #2 and got a reading of 0, which means the solenoid is either stuck Open, or I can't use a volt-meter correctly.

So is solenoid #2 a lock up solenoid or a shift solenoid? Does the price for this kit seem too cheap for a reason? Or is it just because it's an old transmission?

Edited**- Rechecked the picture on ebay and noticed it was 2 different types of solenoids thanks to dropzone, assuming that means the kit would work fine for my application and would allow me to replace Solenoid #2?

FWIW, I saw on the ebay listing that those are "upgraded" smaller solenoids.

I just saw that on another listing as well. For whatever reason I'm having a hard time finding the proper ones. I guess I will go ahead and order them and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up.

To me it seemed like the upgrade is a good thing - just sayin

Just wanted to leave a quick update for anyone in the future. I replaced ALL 3 solenoids last week from the kit, also replacing the trans filter while I had the pan off. As of now I have fixed the problem, I can actually accelerate from a stop and seemed to have solved the issue. Thanks for all the help.
