95 4runner 3.0 poor gas mileage
Hi all,
I have a 1995 4runner that I purchased new. It's been a great vehicle for 18 years but recently the gas mileage has dropped. I used to get 220 miles to a tank, now I get 130-140 if I am lucky. The truck still runs as it has always done. Nothing sounds or feels different in how she runs. I did a tune up, checked o2 sensors, checked air filters, leaned it out a bit, nothing helped with the mileage problem. I had the head gasket replaced 8 years ago. Can anyone offer any other suggestions as to what I should try next?
Thanks
Andy

How many miles on the motor? How many miles on the o2 sensor? The o2's are only good for 100k or so, after that, even tho they may fall in spec, the arent very efficient.
My rig has over 300k on it, and I can tell ya that no matter what I do, I will only get 10-12mpg around town. Still does ok at highway speeds, but the motor is tired, and has to work harder in stop & go.
Also... What exactly do you mean by "leaned it out a bit"? Unless you adjusted the wheel in your VAFM, there isnt much you can do to change fuel/air mixture.

IMHO I would at least replace upstream sensor.

Also check your Engine Coolant Temperature sensor and the VAFM (the IAT is inside) with a multimeter per the service manual specs. If these are malfunctioning, it'll throw off the fuel mixture since it adds more fuel when "cold".
