93 sr5 v6 3l timing belt hack job?
hello,
im working on a friend's truck, doing a water pump replacement. I could tell when I saw the timing belt that something was off. It was installed backwards and the cam marks on the belt were nowhere near the right places. The truck is a 93, but somebody installed a later idler pulley when they did the belt. The tensioner spring setup that's supposed to be on this model year is gone. I'm wondering if I can make this mess work with a shorter timing belt, or if the original configuration is the only way to go. The older style pulley seems to be available, but the tensioner spring bracket seems like it might be harder to find. Thanks for any and all help anyone might offer.

When it comes to the factory marks on the belt, they don't mean anything after original installation. The belt 'hunts'; it only comes back to its original position every once in a while. Not every few revolutions, for sure.
That alone means nothing. As to the differences in early and late tensioner parts, I have no personal experience as to what mix and match is possible.

That is wild! The belt jumps out of the gear teeth and the engine doesn't jump time? I've only ever dealt with geared timing on an old motorcycle, and gear and chain on a 78 ford. I will say when I turned this 93 v6 over with a socket wrench I could see the belt popping loose and slipping teeth, but the cam and crank marks on the engine and gears still lined up. I didn't spin it more than twice, It just looked really wrong to me to see that belt jiving around the way it did. Hey, thanks for the info!

I was able to order the tensioner spring and the tab that mounts to the water pump for the spring to hook onto. I got if from a dealership for like $60, but that was 10 years ago. Try these guys, I find OEM gems for all of my trucks and 4Runners here. http://parts.villagetoyota.com/
