92 toyota wont stay in 4wheel drive
when i spin my hubs to lock them and then i stift the 4 wheel drive shifter all the way down towards me the light on my dash lights up. but when im driving it just falls out of 4wd. please help
|
what u mean falls out? lever moves or lockers unlock? u might just need to adjust the 4wd lever so it locks in place.
|
i put it in 4wd and the shifter just pops right back out..think it could be my hubs not locking fully? my passerenger side hub is hard to lock in or do you think it could be something else
|
Do you have a body lift? Could also be a detent spring

not trying to be stupid here but, do you have a manual trans? Is it only popping out when shifting gears? If so, your trans shifter could be hitting the 4wd shifter knocking it out of 4wd.
I know some of these are different and the transfer case shifter could be located slightly different than what mine is. But because my shifter bushings and seats in both the transfer case and transmission shifters are sloppy, when I am in 4lo and I shift from 1st to 2nd it will knock my transfer case shifter out of 4wd. On some, I believe it's reverse that will knock the two shifters together. just not sure which one you have or even if I am correct. |
yes it has a body lift and is a detent spring hard to fix? and no when i shift it doesnt hit the 4wd shifter out

Pull up the shifter boot and see if it is binding the shifter. Two things can happen, one is the rubber boot can get stuck between shifter and base plate metal and push it out of gear (like a tennis ball between the shifter and floor). 2nd option is that the rubber boot can get stretched and pull back on the shifter (think of a bungee cord between the shifter and the dash). Relative body/drive train motion while driving plus the built up rubber tension can pop it out of gear.

I have a body lift also and it makes it difficult for 4low to stay in gear. 4 high is not a problem. What happens is the shaft of the shifter hits the base plate and wont let it full engage the gear. I think it's your shifter base plate, just cut it to fit or take it off first and see if the problem goes away.
The detent ball should be easy to take out. Look on trail-gears website for the dual shifter install. I'm pretty sure that's the spring you need to replace if it is the problem. |

ok thanks for your help. one last question what do you think about warn hubs?
|
Warn's are OK, main weak point is they don't use the factory cone washers, just plain lock washers. That makes them prone to loosening up, so best to check the nuts for tightness periodically.
|
IMO warns are overrated on the toy's. But they are better than most other aftermarket one's. IE MileMarker. The warn hubs for the Ford's they are the best out there. As long as they are the ones that have the 7/8 engagement not the 1/4 turn engagement.

i went to install mine and i took the 6 acorn bolts off and popped the aisins stock hub cover off and when i went to loosen the stock bolt that holds it in i found out that it was stripped is this a hard fix for me? http://1224101526a

You need to chase the threads...
Find a long bolt with the PROPER size and pitch and grind a small groove down it, parallel to the bolt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuSk53cMsFk It'll work like a charm... A free charm... I find it hard to believe they're stripped... BUT, I have bought every truck in EVERY state of repair, and from every douche bag with an adjustable wrench before... If it's one thing I've learned, it's anything's possible... PS, AISIN's are better, cheaper and stronger... But it's a free country. Do whatever you feel is necessary. |
