88 4x4 truck clutch fork bearing clips
 

Replaced the clutch on my 88 toyota 4x4 truck, on the clutch fork carrier bearing? with the 2 dogears on it, it had the 2 clips in the picture attached to it and the clutch fork, to my knowledge haynes manual doesn't cover the re-install of these 2 clips. It should be a simple thing to put these back on, but i'm not good at this kind of puzzle. Curlycue end on clutch fork? to the bearing dogears? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Odd, my 88 doesn't have those. It's got the one-piece type clip found on the later models. Must be a 22RE thing that year, or maybe they're interchangeable, IDK. I know you get a new one with a new throwout bearing though.

Ya, from what I remember, curly-q end goes into the depression in the clutch fork. It fits in there nicely. The one piece clip seems to be a much stronger design...but I'm not sure it matter much once it's all put together.

i thought those clips come on the throw out bearings and then clip around the front if the fork to hold it on there...

Got em on now, they don't seem to be very "snug" though. Thanks mud for the fsm diagram, i looked at that link ya posted i'm assuming just do the manual for the 88 4runner? i didn't see the list for the 88 truck in there.

They're the same. From 84-88, the truck and 4Runner share the same FSM.

Yeah. One end, more "rounded" end, goes onto the clutch fork. Other end clips around the "ears" of the throwout bearing hub. Not the actual bearing itself. Hard to know what people mean when they say "front" and "back" in relation to some of this stuff...

The fork has a depression punched into the..."fork" parts, the end of the two prongs. The part sticking out goes against the throwout bearing hub, the other side, which was punched in, is where the curled ends of the clips go. That's what's in my head anyways...just did it a month ago.

I agree, old fart, it is NOT a snug fit...the second time I did my tranny we kept bumping the clutch fork where it sticks out of the side of the bellhousing when we were putting the tranny back in, and it kept popping the clips off. I couldn't understand how they could possibly stay on there with normal use, but I think that the throwout bearing gets sandwiched in there against the clutch once it's all back together, so the clips don't do much after that.

Sigh yea, they popped off 3 times now, it's gettin late so tomorrow i'm thinkin just a lil touch of superglue to hold em, once the clutch gets bled that pinhead amount of SG should pop right off. (i hope) if not they will still be in place.

If im not mistaken cant you squeeze those with some channel locks to tighten back up? They do loose some of their spring over time.

The new ones I got from Toyota were not stiff enough for that. They are really pretty flimsy.
