82 Supra AFM on a 89 22re

I,ve seen alot of confusing write up's about the AFM swap. A lot of pre 88.5 using pre 88.5 AFM's and using post 88.5 AFM's on 89 and newer trucks. Simple question is I just bought a 82 AFM (22250-43110 197100-3020) is it going to work (plug@play) on my 89 22re?

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 11:36 AM

Plug it in and find out?

A1dreese 07-31-2010 11:42 AM

I'm not going to bother breaking it all down to install a piece that isn't going to work. I figured someone out there has the answer and could save me the time.

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 11:44 AM

well, I mean, you're gonna unplug your old one, plug in the new one, run new intake tubing.......it's not a lengthy process we're talking here.

Yes. It will work...unless it's a bad AFM...

well, I'm going to undertake the Batt/filter swap at the same time. I just read an incredibly confusing article on Pirate about this and it's got me wondering to cut the silicone fittings to make this AFM that might not work fit. Or just resale it. I tested the AFM it's good, factory seal is untouched. If you say it works on 89's that's good enough for me

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 11:59 AM

Well, that's what Im saying...before I swapped the battery/intake I put it together and ran it for a while to make sure it was good. The battery/intake swap is a good idea anyways 'cause you can still use your OEM AFM.

Ok, Operation Breath Better is a go! Thanks for the input:)

That part number worked fine on my 87. Just saying.

On member did say he got one with a "dead spot". Either way, it still did fine, but he eventually got another one.

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 12:05 PM

foooo show............

A1dreese 07-31-2010 12:17 PM

It's post 88.5 that my question was based on. from what I read it should work on your 87 it's the post 88.5 22re's that got me thinking. theirs a long and confusing write up on Pirate where the guy goes into how the 82 AFM won't work on anything post 88.5. blah blah blah. Anyone hooked up the 82 to a 89 and newer 22re?

A1dreese 07-31-2010 04:09 PM

Put the new AFM in and IT WORKED!! now to take it all apart and do the Batt/filter switch..After I finished the LCE header and exhaust I thought that was impressive but, mixed with the K&N and the AFM it really opened up:) Very excited to get the switch done and maybe a cam next! Thanks to BigBluePile, I was a thinking I wasted a hundo on a useless part but, not the case..

Did you notice anything upon installing the supra afm?? I have a 89 and have been contemplating this swap but haven't actually done it yet. I already did the battery/ intake swap...

A1dreese 07-31-2010 04:27 PM

Yea, I noticed the difference immediately. Much crisper and less lag in 4-5 gear. I did only drive it about 30 miles, half in town and half on open highway. It was a little rough the first mile or so but, I reason the ECU was thinking about it and evened out nicely. Was a good buy no doubt and cant wait to start the swap and see what that brings. In my search i found YotaYard.com get's them in stock the most (100$). I got mine through a private seller so can't vouch for them..

i need to see some pictures because i just understand what all the big hoopla is all about..

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 04:47 PM

What pics? You go from a smaller bore AFM to a bigger 3" bore AFM...the AFM's themselves look about the same....

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 04:48 PM

Good to hear that it worked!! :great: Now get the swap done!!!!!!!!!:banger:

Ok, about the swap, I'm having problems getting it going. I've been studying all the pics that other YT guy's have posted but #1 prob is my AC HP hose, which seems a major obstacle. I've decided to order the connection hoses from siliconeintakes but, what about a box? It all seems a little jimmy rigged, I want it right. Any thoughts? Yes, will post before and after's. Here's the AFM and the before shot eingine bay also a shot of what I'm looking at in terms of the switch..

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 06:54 PM

You wanna box? Like to house the cone filter youre running on the AFM now? I didn't have any issues with any of the AC stuff...

A1dreese 07-31-2010 07:07 PM

Well, isn't the fear rain and w/e soaking the filter coming in from around the hood gap? Better is better but, i don't see any custom box pics. I haven't had a problem in the current config so it's not a show stopper. I'll just print off all the pics of successful switches and go from there..

BigBluePile 07-31-2010 07:23 PM

I wouldn't worry about rain...
