can't speak to the Tacoma set up directly as I am a Runner guy but did not want you to think you were being ignored. 72 people looked in and did not know what to say. I will take a stab at getting you some help...

On the 3rd gen Runners (96-02) there are a variety of spring and shock options both front and rear. A common upgrade is using Tundra springs or the TRD version Tundra springs up front for a bit of lift. Those springs can then be paired with a variety of shock options. Adjustable Bilsteins are a common if expensive choice.

As I understand it the fronts are referred to as struts because the shock mounts inside the spring. In the rear the shocks ride separately from the springs.

You may want to reference the Sonoran Steel website. It is packed with info that may better answer your question than I am doing.

To answer your question: I am just not sure on Tacomas-but on the Runners I am not aware of different springs being used on the 4 cylinder equipped rides versus the cylinder equipped trucks.

TTORA is another forum a bit more specific to Tacoma owners and you may get a variety of opinions over there as well.
