22ret engine

i was out at a junkyard recently and found a 22ret in an 86 pickup. i wanted to know what everyone thought of that engine. its a full block and im interested in pulling it and eventually rebuilding and throwing into like an 86 2wd. do you all think its worth the time and money? i've heard the turbo isnt good for crawling or off roading bcuz of the lack of oil pressure the engine builds. also what do you think a good price would be for it? everything is there, i was told it runs, the fuel pump just went out and the truck had been rolled so the owner sold it

here we go again...

never mind... I'm too tired...

and the block has dished pistons to give it a 7.5:1 compression ratio...

Also, Turbo oil pumps put out more pressure... they have to b/c of the Turbo...

ok well that didnt really help thank you though.

It's a cool motor just because its rare.

The motor has a lower compression ratio, which gives you lesslow-end torque, but a properly running 22R-TE will hit full boost around 2200rpm loaded down, and will give you gobs more midrange than any 22R-E.

If you're looking to build up a motor for the truck, while a 7M-GTE would probably be a better choice, the 22R-TE does have potential. There's a guy around these parts making 200whp, and something stupid like 260ft/lbs with a GT28 turbo in a Celica. With a larger turbo, like a 57-trim CT-26 (which is near bolt-on BTW), you can get a nice 250whp out of the motor.

well the 7m would be good but yea like you said the rarity of the engine is what got me interested. i think it would be a fun project to do. thanks for the input too. is this what you have in your 86 also?

If it is a whole motor and didn`t spin a bearing running on it`s side people tell me the complete engine with manifolds is worth like $ 1500.00 I am not sure if that is true .

i have 2 of these trucks and will say for daily driving the 3.4 liter blows them away .

Why you would go to all that trouble for a 2wd pick up hay but to each his own.

you might want to check out 22RTE.com
better yet, just tell me where this truck is at--my 81 needs it more than your 2WD:D

oregon_yota 02-14-2010 07:16 AM

yea that 3.4 is a beast but i just like the 22r engines they're bulletproof. like i said i figured it would be a fun project. yea it might be a pain in the ass, but isnt it always? haha

i.e, per usual, you heard wrong...

Any high mileage engine not properly maintained will have low oil pressure... That's prolly what the numb nut that told you that was thinking, strike that, meant to say... B/c if he could think he'd of known that...

I...uhh....umm...... did. Until I spun a bearing in it. Right now I have a 22R-E in my truck. I'm still on the fence right now, do I rebuild the complete 22R-TE I have sitting in my garage, or rebuild the complete 7M-GTE sitting in my garage.

I have a 87 toyota pick up with a 22ret that I blew up last summer. I was running 17lbs and could do about 115 plus in 3rd gear sitting about 6k in the motor. Great motor and fun to drive

Buy the whole truck. Its a cool toyota but you need all the parts from a donor truck.
