22re over cooling issues
 

In need of help! I recently built a new 22re motor for my 1990 4x4. first off let me give the specs on the motor. new block and internals. Std. bore pistons new rods the works on the lower half. The head is a new peace and was ported polished and has stiffer springs. When i bought it, the company advertised it as high performance head. The cam is a 268 Deg. or a rv cam. After buttoning up the rest of the motor and setting the timing it seems to run like a champ. I'm 200+ miles into the break-in period and there is one problem, the motor does not heat up!:think:The motor has a cold air intake and a after-market header and exhaust as well. To tackle this problem I have replaced the sendeing unit to the gauge and even traced the wire back to the fire wall to make sure it was not crossed up during installation. I also replaced the temp gauge from a 180 Deg. to a 195 Deg. That made a minor difference and the gauge moved up about a quater of an inch or so. The cooling system is also new and all of it's components as well. The gauge worked previously, and when grounded will move around. I also checked the ground for the gauge under the dash and its fine as is the fuse. I checked the motor, when it was warmed up, with an infrared temp sensor and it was at around 180 deg. I know that these motors run cold but I was under the assumption that they should run at around 200 or 225 deg. WTF!:pop:What am I missing here?

You seem to have an air bubble in the system, giving you a false reading.

Try getting all the air out.

yea i'm with cougar you need to bleed the cooling system.

Have you actually tested the thermostat to see if it is working properly? How? I put mine in a pot of hot water on the stove and use a thermometer to see when the t-stat starts to open and when it fully opens. See how that compares to the temp. rating on the t-stat.

I would imagine if he rebuilt everything he would put a new t-stat in unless he got ahold of a bad one at the parts store...

Burp, burp, burp...No one seems to do this anymore...does it blow hot air from the heater???

I ALWAYS test every t-stat I put in my vehicles, new or not. Why? New parts only mean they are not used, I have have new t-stats not work as they were supposed to out of the box. And I always test the old and new t-stats side by side and on more than one occasion, I have put the old t-stat back in because it was working OK while the "new" one was not.

^ yea i know what ya mean. I've been lucky not to have too many probs with t-stats. But i tell ya i had to take back 3 master cyls to a parts store one time because the piece of grabage remans leaked and did not work i ended up after taking 4 master cyls back buying one new from toyota and i have no issue now lol.

The cooling system has been burped and burped. That does not mean it that there are now air bubbles in the system, but there is coolant flowing past the sensor because when i replaced it coolant came out. And yes I burped it after the sensor was replaced. Since the motor is running at around 180 to 195 I can only assume that the t-stat is working also since when i put in the 195 t-stat it changed the situation, if only slightly. The heat does get warm and the engine seems to get warm if only a little. The old t-stat was a 180 from toyota and seemed to work fine as well I changed to a 195 to get the current results.

Hmmmm Interesting phenomenon here...
Is it causing an issue? If not run it.
I know I have to replace mine, I'm just being lazy about it. The gauge moves just past the line on the left about the thickness of the line. Once in a while it goes halfway, sits there for a moment and then drops. I know the stat sicks a bit. But no matter where it is I cannot tell a difference in how it runs.

The only thing that I can think of is that it's a faulty gauge. I have yet to replace it since the gauge worked fine previously and tearing into the dash is not on the high priority list since I've been working on the motor every weekend for a month.

Here goes-

Does anyone know if I can bolt on an aftermarket 3-core radiator from an '81 Hilux 22r straight across to my '84 22r, without any mods?

I think the '84 frame is slightly wider than the '81, but I am not sure if the radiator bolt pattern follows suit...
