Tacoma Tool Box

3 Attachment(s)
Alright guys...I'm trying to decide what to do. I think I've pretty much narrowed it down to a tool box instead of a camper shell.

Those of you that know me know that I eliminate all chrome from my trucks. My Tacoma thankfully has the perfect amount of chrome, almost none. The emblems are the only things that are chrome and they look fine the way they are.

I am now wondering how horrible it would look if I got the Toyota tool box for my Taco. It will fit perfectly, it's made by Toyota, easy to install, yada yada yada. A little expensive but with the discount I get at my local dealer it isn't bad.

Here is my Taco:

Do you all think it will look okay? Ideally I would like a WeatherGuard box that is the flat black steel but they don't make any that will fit the shortbed Taco's.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

I would just scuff, prime and paint the diamond-plating black. Otherwise I think its a wise choice, but will eat up precious bed space (assuming yours is a SB).

Fink 06-23-2008 07:46 AM

Mine is a shortbed. I won't be hauling anything big in the bed. I have read too many horror stories of tailgates getting messed up from loading and unloading 4wheelers. I will be trailering mine from now on. I mainly use it for hauling large loads of water softener (I help my cousin who owns a car wash), about 10-15 50lb bags, that and just normal home and garden stuff (gas cans, mulch, gravel). That's the most I haul back there and I always evenly distribute the weight.

I wonder how hard it would be to remove the top of it...that would make painting it easy as pie. I could also get it powdercoated...

I too am considering a toolbox for my double cab, but I am not too sure I'd like the look. Does anyone with a DC and a toolbox have any pictures they would be willing to post?

Fink:
You might try PM'ing John aka: ah64id, he had the Toyota box in his DC before he traded or sold the truck. I remember him having some trouble with the Toyota box.

Personally I think that the Toyota box looks like crap in a shortbed, it places any load in the truck too far back due to the width of the box but a lot of people seem to like it..

$$$, but it is a perfect fit, no drilling, and very high quality construction/locking. After much shopping around and deliberation, I saw one in person at Big Bear and that sealed the deal.

Here's my pics:

UWS makes a good one, don't have a link though. Found this picture, similar to the UWS, looks pretty good:

I got a Trail Boss brand for mine. I like the fact I can still slide stuff under it and on the sides of it as well. Not a huge box by no means, but just right to hold a tool box and a few other truck things. Has gas pistons to open it, heavy duty locks and handles. It attaches to the rail via j bolts. Nope is does not slide back and forth along the rails.

If I were to get one for my DC SB I would look into this narrow box from Deflecta shield: http://www.performanceproducts4truck...&cid=1&sid=110
doesn't take up the whole bed but still allows room for the necessities IMO

The tool box vs. the cap is a good idea. I had a tool box, nice one, sold it in a pinch and wish I still had it. Seems I don't like to run the cap all that much, basically only if I'm taking the dogs camping. Tool box you can lock. Caps, I've had mine broken into. I would love to have a tool box again. Yeah, paint it black. it would look great.

TOYOTA 1 06-23-2008 12:07 PM

id just get a low profile one thats already powdercoated black! it would look sick on your truck.

oh duh.. like that one a few posts up^ lol

Da Hui 06-27-2008 10:15 AM

Get the low profile UWS.

And the weak tailgate TSB.

dropzone 07-09-2008 09:23 PM

so what kind of box did you get?

Fink 07-10-2008 05:05 AM

Honestly man, I'm still searching.

There is a guy over on TTORA that has a UWS chest(second one down) mounted in his and it looks awesome.

Very low profile and sleek. Downside?
He had to drill 4 holes in his bed - which is something I am not ready to do.
It voids the warranty for the bed and I don't know that my emotions could handle drilling holes in my baby...

I really like that Trail Boss box that you posted a pic (quote) of, I might check some more into that.

I am trying to find a truck here locally that has the Toyota box installed in it.
I want to be able to see it before I buy.

I spoke with John (AH64) and he said he liked his but that the latch/locking mechanism seemed weak.
For what they are asking for it - I want it to be stout.

So really, to answer your question, I haven't done anything about it yet - just taking my time and doing some research.

Thanks for checking in!

Fink:devil:

P.S - Da Hui, good to see you over here man. This place is a little different than TTORA but hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as we do!

Sorry, didn't mean to highjack. Still looking at getting a toolbox.

Not a problem, I just wanted to end it before it started...threads have a way of spiraling out of control.
It's really quite impressive to be honest.

I am really wanting a tool box. I hate having all my gear in my back seats. With a car seat and all the other junk I have space is at a premium.

I may just bite the bullet and go for the Toyota box.
If nothing else, because it's easy to mount.

Well, I could not find a toolbox that I liked so I bought a Snugtop XTR. Fink - did you find what you were looking for?

Haven't been on here in a while. But I did want to show mine. It's been on the truck for over a year and I love having it. It is the deep model with the low pro lid. I can put the chairs and cooler it in when I go to the beach. And I keep my snatch rope and jumper cables in it all the time with a tool set.

Sorry for the late response, I just logged on for the first time in months.

Fink 09-20-2008 06:26 AM

Hey guys, sorry it's been so long since I've posted in here.

I still have not done anything - money is tight right now and the thought has crossed my mind of trading my truck for either an FJ, Tundra or a newer Tacoma...why? I have no idea - probably the positive equity I have in it - like cash eating a hole in my pocket.

Plus working at a dealership makes it WAY too easy to get a good deal on a car.

Do it

FJ is my vote

Corey 09-20-2008 10:34 AM

Here is one for ya Fink.

This guy jumped in and started modding it right away.

Good luck on your search for a new rig if you decide to do that.
