CV Joint strains on lifted 4th Gen 4Runners

I have a new 2007 LTD V8 4Runner and am wanting to mod it. I want to lift the front 3inches and the rear 3inches with a coil/shock lift but am concerned about the CV joints vibrating at highway speeds and Upper Control Arms rubbing the tires. Am I overanalyzing this? What do I need to do?

That's a good link, and very informative. But unless I just missed something, I didn't see anything that specifically addressed CV issues.

I would like to do an inexpensive lift on my '06 Tacoma, but want to stay under the maximum lift that the CV joints can take without lowering the front diferential. Does anyone have any idea what the maximum is?

Which 2" lift do you have? What size tires do you run? Can you post a pic?

I know that Toyota warranty is valid up to 5" of lift. So, my guess is that you won't have any issues with CV's until you exceed that.

I'm installing the 3" kit from Slee this weekend. I will let you know once I get some miles on if I run into any issues. I doubt I will though, seems it'd be more documented if there was issues.

Taller lifts lower the differential to keep the CV joints from being at too much of an angle. So far, the tallest lifts that I've seen that don't lower the differential are 3".

So my guess is 3". But before I get a 3" lift, I want to be sure I won't have CV issues.

ur cv's boots will more than likely wear out quicker with a lift, its just the chance that u take when getting it. however, when they wear out, u can install newer angled cv boots to prevent this. i have a 3inch lift, but i also have the 1 inch dif drop which lowers the dif and helps them out some. i have had it for 2000 miles so far, no problems, no vibes. beware that on the tacomas, the dif drop "sometimes" causes vibes. i am not sure about the runners, but most of the vibes for us is from the driveshaft angle.

Thank you all for your discussion - For my rig, I'm probably going to go with the Slee 3" OME lift with a 1" diff drop from Toytech and new UCAs. My runner sees more highway than trail so hopefully there wont be any problems at highway speeds in the long run.

At least boots are fairly cheap.

But what I'm more concerned about are the joints themselves, since a broke one could leave me stranded. How well do the joints hold up to a 3 inch lift with no differential drop?

^^im not sure about that, but i have read that some people that dont use them only get like 6000 miles out of their boots, im not sure if thtas true, but that story convinced me to get the drop. the angle isn't bad at all with the drop. it is worth it.

Why not get the drop? If it's made properly what do you have to lose? I have the SS 7.1 setup w/ the diff drop and I think it's a pretty key part if you don't want to be tearing CVs

What all is involved with the 1" differential drop? Does it require any major surgery to install? Or is it a simple matter of a few brackets that lower the differential with very little work?

diff drops are not necessary and is a complete waste of money. absolutely no advantage in having one.

What is your reasoning behind this?

I was wondering the same thing, since any lift I've seen over 3 inches requires that the differential be dropped. Even with 3" or less, it still means less CV angle and therefore longer CV life.

it is not required, there are pros and cons to it. the only advantage is that it helps ur cv angles, and it should make them last longer. the disadvantage is it sometimes causes vibes and u will loose an inch of clearance. it also causes more stress on the front bolt. i have not had any vibes, and i wheel in dirt, so i dont care if i hita little dirt, i have never had any problems with it.
