4th Gen. Low Tire Pressure Sensor question
 

Hi Group,
I started to have a problem about two weeks ago. I got in the Runner and there tat light was glowing at me. I got out and looked...... nothin' wrong. Got the tire gauge and one tire was down about 2 pound..... light went out.
Two weeks later there is that light again. Did the same thing for checking. The light didn't go out. checked everything again 2 days later, including the spare, and the light stayed on. For some reason I did the "clear the Maintenance Light" reset and the Tire Pressure light went out.

Is anyone else having funny things happening with this system? Are there any known problems with the system? The Runner is an 04 so I couldn't imagine the in wheel sensors needing service. Any help?

i work in a tire place, and normally for any factory sensors we refer customers to the dealer.... on most of the cars, there is a way the consumer can reset the light, and it describes it most times in the owners manual that most people never read... but the way most of those lights work, is they get triggered, and then stay on until reset....

My understanding is that the tire sensor works on the premise of the tire that is spinning more than the other ones is low and it will alert you. I could imagine if something went wrong with this system how it could annoy you in tha that sense. Maybe yours is just overly sensitive!

First, check all tires to ensure that all the tires are the same psi.

If it is and the problem persists, take it into the dealer to have em fix something that is not working.

I sortof had the same problem with mine, but it was on when I got my new 4Runner, and they claimed that it would go off after a little bit, as you could quess, it didnt. All I did was take in into the dealership and they just reset it or something like that, and now it is completely fine.

Glad I got an '03, the year before the nanny tire monitor.

These things seem to be a royal pita for some people with an '04+.

Hey i think its just a glitch in the system, i had the same problem 2 days ago on my 04, It was extremly cold that nite and the sensor light came on. I refiled to the right pressure , 32 PSI on my sport edition and the light never came back on.

It just seemed odd to me that the low pressure light finally went out when I reset the maintenance light (that didn't need resetting). I have had 2 flats before this and it worked flawlessly and then this stuff started a few months later.
How "exact" do the pressures have to be? Is there a range? Does the maintenance light reset have anything to do with the low pressure light?

You know those things don't really work. Some Japanese engineers have coded a repeat cycle in random conditions, than for nothing more than to have you inspect your tire pressure. I bet since you have owned the Runner you have checked the tire pressure more often than any other vehicle that you have owned.

All in the name of safety.

Also a good ploy to make ya drop by the stealer so they can inspect your vehicle too (i.e. warranty blah blah blah).

Glad mine didn't come w/ that nonsense.
