2014 Rear Drum Brake Disaster — BIG $$$
Hello,
I've a 2014 4WD Double Cab Long Bed, 40,000 miles.
I heard some nasty grinding sound from the RR brakes and took it to the Toy dealer. They informed me that the something in the break has busted, that there were unable to get the drum off to see exactly what had happened, but that based upon the noise it sounded like the "entire" brake apparatus there, from the drum, the pads, springs, hydraulic cylinder, springs, etc. are all probably toast.
They have ordered parts and will only replace what is needed once they do get the drum off.
The vehicle is 24 months old and of course the brakes are out of warranty.
I wonder if anyone else has seen this sort of thing happen on such a new-ish Tacoma?
Is there a way for a consumer to see if there are any service bulletins for this problem?
Has anyone has any luck appealing to Toyota regional/national customer care for help with Toyota paying part or entirely for this sort of thing? I know, "things break", but seriously? 2 years old and a complete failure? (My 1990 Toyota P/U's rear drum breaks never even had the pads replaced or drums turned!)
Thanks for any thoughts.

Having worked at a stealership before I know the brake pads and shoes are considered a wear item. So if you are going to appeal to the company you need to be able to show that something broke, not wore out. not "I accidentally drove around with the parking brake on" or something like that. Good luck.
