Unhappy 2003 T4R 4wd ECM replacement

Hi there guys,

I would like to ask any experts this brief question, but first, a little background.

I recently purchased a used 2003 T4R Limited V8, and noticed several months after the purchase that it does not shift from 4WD HI to 4WD Lo. I've followed the procedures and manual, and to no avail it would not shift into 4LO.

I took it into a local mechanic and they diagnosed it as no voltage being put out to the 4WD actuator AFTER the 4wd ECM (which could explain the problem I'm having). They also told me that I'd have to take it to the dealer for replacement and "Programming" of the control module. I know this could potentially be a thousand dollar fix if I take it there and would like to avoid any super expensive labor costs.

Now to my question: Is the 4WD ECM self programming, and assuming I am able to purchase an OEM module could I simply swap it out myself to fix the problem? (This is assuming the ECM is the sole culprit in the issue)

Thanks ahead of time for your help.
