Yet Another Overdrive Question

Before I am strung up or thrown to the wolves about asking another remedial overdrive question, please read on... I just installed a new (used) auto tranny in my 90 3.0 4runner...everything went great with the install. When I went to take it on a test drive, it would shift from 1st to 2nd and then to 3rd, but when I got up to speed it wouldnt shift into overdrive. I have had this truck for a long time so I am aware of the tranny not shifting when the engind temp is still cold, so i kept driving until the temp came up to halfway on the temp gauge...still no down shift. Now i have made sure that the o/d switch is engaged and that all the other "have to's" have been in effect, but still no down shifting...some people have told me of a possible electrical connection problem, all the way to the overdrive solinoid...I am not a transmission guru, and could hardly be called a master mechanic, and I would just like to know that it wasnt just something small and silly that I missed on the install...I just would like some direction in this matter so that I just dont start replacing all kinds of little crap...all serious comments are welcomed

might want to start by checking all the electrical connections are correct and tight. find all the associated sensors (fsm) and check them for proper operation. as a final check, look at the lines from the trans to and from the rad for any abnormalities. repair as necessary.

ps

check the kickdown cable adjustment as well, that can affect shifting.
