wont drive in second...uphill

so i have a 93 4wd pickup with a 22re engine.

i did some work on it recently and now it's running fine...downhill. uphill, it runs good but only in first gear...as soon as i shift into second it starts to splutter, buck and die...if i don't downshift again.

any help greatly appreciated.

Timing chain, the whole deal(guides, tensioner, etc...). Adjusted the valves, Welded an exhaust leak, and a new PCV valve.

i havent been able to get the timing perfect. for some reason no one has a timing light, even the local Napa dosent stock them anymore.

sounds like ECM is running in survival mode - check timing, wires, etc.

it wasnt running to well before...and the chain had never been replaced.

i think it might be a fuel problem
my next step is to check the fuel filter and pressure regulator.
any other suggestions or ideas on what it could be?
