Why won't this 22re cylinder head come off?
I've got the exhaust cleared away, and the ten bolts off the intake out. The front of the intake moves away from the head easily; it's the back part of the intake that seems like it's hanging up on something. It will come away from the head a little, but not like the front will. I've removed the two bolts for the pipe that feeds into the bottom of the intake, but haven't broke it loose.
It's hard to see what's going on back in there, to see what's hanging up since there is quite a bit of clutter yet to try and see thru. Any thoughts? Thanks. vmax84 http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/3...260001ayc3.jpg http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2...260017ati9.jpg http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/9...260018aas5.jpg |
I believe that the water pipe that goes behind the back of the head is bolted to the head (you can see this pipe in your first picture going into the bottom of the intake manifold). By removing one of the bottom bolts, it should allow it to come off.

That pipe still connected in your first pic will not let the intake move away from the head. The pipe will bend if you try to force it. You got a good pic of it you should be able to reach in there with a long screwdriver to get between the pipe flange and the intake and tap it with a hammer to break it loose. You will need a new gasket.
Hope that helps. |
Thanks for the info!! I'll have to try it again tomorrow since I have to get to work. Thanks again.

Ok, I had a few minutes before leaving for work to try and break that pipe off of the intake, with no luck. It's hard to get at and to get something back in there and try and tap it loose from the manifold is diffulcult.
Any other ideas? Thanks. vmax84 The sooner I can get this thing out of the truck, the sooner I can order my new engine from Orient!!! We have cash in hand since selling a extra snowmobile around the house!!!! |
Anybody have a pic of a built up 22re sitting on an engine stand, showing the back side of the motor?

I can't see it in the picture but there is a bolt that is hidden in a puddle of oil right under the distributor drive gears and cam shaft sproket. Did you remove this one?
Sorry I misread your post. I thought you said you were having trouble getting the front of the head off the engine block. |

In 4hummer's last pic, you can see the bolt im talking about. its the one on the bottom center of the black trapezoid thingy on the back of the head.

Two aluminum tubes bolt to the back of the head. I drew boxes around them in these pics.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../Manifold1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...eadGasket2.jpg As you can see, I left the intake tube attached to the intake manifold. You have to unhook it from the rubber hose that isn't attached to anything in the second picture. Rob |
Not only does 4Hummer sell me a decent cylinder head for my repair job, he supplies the grey matter along with it for disassembly!!! Thanks man. That rear end pic is worth a thousand words!!!!
Thanks again to all. vmax84 |
Thank you as well, 24, for the extra pics. The disassemble was going well until this part. Hard to see back in there to figure out what to take apart. But the pics help big time!!!
Thanks again. vmax84 |

Do you have any more pics of the vaccum lines for the 22RE? I need as many detailed pics as you have. I have had my head off for too long and am not going to remember where all the lines go. I marked a bunch of them, but I know I missed some.

Yeah could you please do that? My truck came from the factory with the 3.0 so all the underhood stuff is irrelevant now that it has a 22RE.
