Why did my clutch go out?

This weekend we were out at GWNF at the fall colors ride and everything is goin good. Then I hit a bump going way to fast trying to catch up with everyone. About 200 feet later the truck cuts off. So I push in the clutch and it goes to the floor.... no pedal at all. I try to start the truck but it wont. Pop the hood and theres steam coming out from the clutch MC reservior. And the small cap is off. The fluid looks like its almost boiling. Well I get it running, limp it off the trail and about 20 minutes down the road back to some sort of civilization, a gas station, get some brake fluid, bleed the clutch, find the ground wire that broke off and it works great. But what caused my clutch to go out. I realize I got air in the system somehow but...how?

Thanks, the GMC was mine before I got the 4Runner.

I was on pretty level ground when it happened, and the big cap didnt come off, just the little cap on the big one.... if that makes any sense.

There's a short piece of rubber line on the pass side of the engine where the clutch line goes down to the tranny. Mine split wide open on mine & with all the air, my clutch pedal stayed on the floor too. Maybe you have some kind of split or leak in this part of your line. Not sure what kind of truck you're driving though.

Sorry, its a '91 4Runner, V6. The fisrt thing I did was check the line because the fluid was so hot I figured it might be sitting on the exhaust but the line was dry and out of the way. Once I bled the clutch it worked fine and still is.
