Doesn't a belt cost the same as a set of pantyhose? Why not just carry a spare belt then?

no doubt. however, the pantyhose can be "installed" without loosening the alt/ps idler/ac idler. temporary fix to get home to replace it.

Yes, back in the beer swilling days, my buddies and I tried it on my Impala.
We drove around the neighborhood for quite awhile until it finally broke.

I can say it worked good enough to get us to safety if needed.
I carry a black pair to match my engine bay decor.
