4.88 Diff out of a '94 V6 4Runnner:

4.10 Diff out of a '90 22RE 4Runner:

Notice the plug coming out of the top of the first diff - the bare metal one just under the swaybar where it curves and makes a "U". It has a two wire harness attached to it (covered in a black sheath). The '90 diff doesn't even have a spot for it.

Both trucks have ABS as far as I know. Is it some sort of speed sensor? I have the 4.88 rear axle in my '90 now...can I use it on my '90 in any way? Thanks.

Yep - ABS sensor. They can be kind of a pain to get out. Grab with vicegrips and twist while prying out.

Very odd indeed. I was told by a number of sources that all 2nd gen 4runners had rear ABS standard. In fact it talks about it in the owners manual and makes it sound standard. Very strange...guess my truck doesn't have it! Thanks for the education hahah.

I was looking for the speed sensor on my 92' yesterday, and according to my chiltons it is that plug you are talking about. You guys are saying it is the ABS sensor. Is there any difference, meaning does it function as both?

Its the ABS speed sensor. Are you talking about the speedo sender?

It is typical Toyota to promote the bigger optional engine models by promoting them with additional features, like in the past, ABS. Look at the new Tacoma's for instance. You can only get fancy features on the V6's, the 4 cylinders are bare bones. For people who might not need the V6 (might not tow, or just want slightly improved gas mileage), Toyota should offer more options/packages for their 4 cylinder models. Especially now a days. Mind you I got the V6 in my truck, but I think people like to have the option to get the 4 cylinder if they want. MInd you I'd probably get the V6.

The other thing that interests/kinda concerns me is "optional" safety items. LIke if you buy the V6 engine or can afford a certain package, you get more air bags, or better braking, or whatever. I think it is kinda crap that people who one person can afford a vehicle of the same year/model that is safer than someone who can't. I think safety general, all safety features, should be available from base models to optional models.

Now by no stretch of the imagination am I promoting "communist" thinking in how I view vehicles, I'm personally annoyed at people who b*tch instead of getting off their ass and getting a better job/becoming more successful/working harder to get what they want instead of trying to bring down the people who do this by b*tching/writing letters/complaining, but I do think safety options (brakes being one of them) shouldn't be an option.

AH64ID- I am pretty sure I do mean the speedo sendor. My Chilton's can often be incomplete, at best. Here's why I ask:
My speedo will get stuck at about 45, and searching for the problem led me to the electronic speed sensor. I took a look at the sensor on the back of my (manual) tranny, the part from this post https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...t=speed+sensor
(Just to add my experience to the cable/electric speedo question I have a 92' 3.0 M/T with R150F that is 100% electric)

I sprayed some electrical contact cleaner on all the contacts, like another post said, but no results. No shavings liike Gadget suggested earlier.

I was also looking for the other sensor that I heard is on the passenger side of the tranny, but all I found was the enlarged ball-point-pen looking deal that I assume is for the reverse light. Dealer said I only have the one sensor on the diff.

Any other tricks with these things besides what is previously suggested? Dealer wants $170...

ABS sucks on our trucks. Forget side impact crap....throw on a set of good sliders.

IIRC the 2nd sensor on trannys if for auto's. Its what the ECT uses for shifting..

The problem could also be the dash... dont know how to test that though

Cool. I will talk to the old man about borrowing his ohm meter to see if I can narrow it down, thanks.

Manual trannys have 3 sensors/plugs. 2 in the case; One for Reverse lights, the other for 4x4 indicator. The 3rd plug/sensor is the speed sensor in the transfer case. I dont know how many plugs auto trannys have, but on any trans the plug on the T-case is the speed sensor.

HOWEVER!!!

They did not start using electronic speedo sensors until 1992. They used those until 1994, when they switched back to mechanical speedo senders in 1995. The electrical speedo sensors had many problems, and if you own a 1992-94 4runner or Pickup, it wasn't a matter of if, but WHEN you had to replace the sensor.

Its very rarely the instrument cluster that goes bad.

Didn't know thats why they went back to cable. Funny enough my 92 has worked better than my 95 cable. I just ordered a speedometer calibration unit for my 93 elec speedo. I'll do a write up when its installed.
