get a mirror and look at the damper from below. make sure you are not leaking from the damper itself, possibly the screw on the end of the damper like mine.

i know this might be a stupid question but i just brought my 93 pickup to the dealership to get new head gaskets the recall had never been done on my truck so they doing it for free even game me a 2010 tacoma to ride around in till its done but they have the motor apart and said they found some parts that need to be replaced a vacuum hose and the fuel damper the hose is taped with electrical tape i know that needs to be fixed but what does the fuel damper do? my truck ran perfect before i brought it in the shop but they are doing the work for just the price of the parts since they alreday have the motor apart

The fuel damper damps the pressure changes in the fuel rail caused by the injectors opening and closing. I'm no Toyota Engineer, but without it I believe that you could hit a speed where the fuel pressure dropped at just the right time to lean out a cylinder.

The part alone is about $150, but it is fairly involved to replace it. As in, if Toyota will do it for free, you should seriously consider it. Some on this forum have reported them leaking after a long while (and a fuel leak is ... bad). Of course, you could always ask the dealer why they recommended replacing it.

I had that damper start spewing gas all over my engine while I was on the road in Oregon. Thank goodness that the engine didn't catch fire. I got it to a dealer and paid $700 to fix it. From that day on I had an idle problem. 2 years later when I pulled the intake manifold I discovered the mechanic never torqued the manifold bolt by the firewall. Hence the inconsistent idle problem.

Oh yeah, I've reused those copper washers and never had a problem.

Those are called banjo bolt washers... no they can not be reused... or shouldnt be re used, but I guess in a jam....do what ya gotta, but replace with new ones a.s.a.p.
I managed to get some from napa, they were not exact fit, but did the trick, and yes...they are a bit pricey, considering all they are is a small peice of fragile metal. I think I paid like $3/each... not too bad if ya only need 1 or 2... but I needed a bunch....

well im plannin on takin it apart as soon as i can to identify what the exact problem is, but in case it ends up needing to be replaced and everything, has anyone done it and can tell me whether its a simple job or a fairly difficult job?

I had a toyota dealer fix mine as I was on the long road trip. I do know that they had to pull the manifold and the whole thing cost about $750!

Be really careful dealing with the fuel situation. But I don't think then other then taking off the intake manifold it's very difficult.

i wasnt sure if it was the damper or somethin more above it, so i just wanted to be prepared for the worst since i couldn't find anything explaining the damper schematics besides the diagram that was posted here, but after checking it again it doesnt have a screw in it at all so its obviously the damper.. im gonna check the dealer though, this oem toyota site online said it would be around $180, but im gonna check with the dealer, and on rockauto.com they have two for $80, theres an intemoto one and an airtex, the airtex one looks better but i havent heard great things about them, but has anyone had any experience with either of these two companies or products?

its cool, id rather jus get one new and not have to worry about it.. i dont want this problem to reoccur again, not when its a fuel issue..
