Well, I broke my truck again....

This time my 3rd member decided to break. 2 or 3 teeth broke off the pinion gear. The ring gear is a little chewed up but no teeth broken off that. Anyone have a clue why the pinion gear would break like this? Also, does anyone have a spare 3rd member they could sell to a poor high school student for cheap?

Pics will be up soon....

I bought the 3rd already setup, it came out of someone elses truck so who knows how old or what brand they are. There was quite a bit of backlash in the gears when I got them, so that may have contributed to their failure.

The pinion tooth profile is stronger than the ring tooth. To do what happened to you is probably either the pattern was set-up way too deep....or the pinion was slopping around(loose/wobbly). Were you leaking gear oil out of the pinion seal?

Thanks for the input. No leaking at the pinion seal at all.

On IFS trucks there is a 3rd in the rear axle, on SFA trucks there is one in the front and rear. It bolts up to the axle housing, and contains the ring and pinion gear.

Here is a pic.
