Water pump bolts tricky to remove
94 4x4 pu 22re w/ ac; i'm in the midst of replacing the water pump at the stage of removal of the water pump mounting bolts going by my chilton's repair manual. the manual says to remove the water pump mounting bolts while the fan assembly is still on, but this creates a problem because the clutch won't allow me enough room to fully unscrew the bolts. is there a trick to this or is the book just dumb and i have to take the fan and clutch off the water pump first. wouldn't be surprised if the book is dumb...if it's me, lets just still blame the book

the chilton's manuals seem to lack common sence sometimes, but pull the 4 nuts or bolts holding the clutch to the pump, and slide the fan out the way. Then you can get to the pump bolts easier. And yes the book is dumb

it does say to loosen the alternator (that shares the belt with the water pump) and remove the radiator shroud and drain and remove the radiator, right? good advice.
then you loosen the bolts a few turns each bolt until you can pop the water pump off with the fan attached
that's worked for me a few times and no need for the fsm.
