Water proofing manual transmission???????
I went ride today and got stuck in a pretty deep water hole (up to the top of the fenders). When I was getting pulled out I noticed I had no power to the wheels, the clutch was slipping. After a slow ride home I was wondering if there was anything to prevent water from going into the transmission.
Plan on doing the diff breathers as soon as I change my fluids. Still need to keep the clutch dry though. Any suggestions????????
Specs: 91 4runner 5spd, v6, 3inch body lift.
Thanks

The gearbox is already waterproof, it's the clutch bell housing that isn't. You could try siliconing the joint between it and the engine, but you wolud need some find of breather because the air inside needs to expand when it gets warm and contract when cooling.
The best thing is not to use the clutch when in deep water or mud. With the clutch engaged the disc is clamped hard to the flywheel and no water should get in between. When you release the clutch water or mud gets between the disc and flywheel and that's when it slips.

Stay out of mud! Best remidy.
I know we all like to play in it from time to time but it destroys parts. The whole tranny is pretty much waterproof as it should be. Not to much more you can do to it. Ide venture to say you should change all your fluids often if you play in mud and water. your axles will probably have alot of water in them too!

Permanently sealing the bellhousing also means that any oil that leaks out the rear seal gets trapped in the bell housing, near the clutch. My truck doesn't leak any oil, but I don't know about yours.
You could seal the bellhousing up with heat resistant tape and put a drain valve on the lower point on the bellhousing, then add a jiggle valve (the breather valve on the axles, high up on the bellhousingor vent it higher, in the engine bay.
Other mods you might want to do if you play in mud and water frequently.

Yeah I plan to do the diff breathers, I have plans for waterproofing the interior, and already have the electric fan. I guess I can come up with something to close that off.
BTW staying out of the mud is not possible. I live in florida thats what its about. lol
Who has the rear disc brake swap?
