I was able to get this far with purchasing ~$100 worth of these tools. ~$25.00 after 20% off.
$49.99 plus 20% off
~$25.00 for these lock ring pliers at pep boys.
That 700ft/lb dewalt impact helped too.

What's your (or anyone reading this) take on these chips on 5th gear? Do you think I can get away with only replacing 5th, or should I snag counter 5th too? Counter 5th looks flawless.

You can see the edges of the chips don't protrude outward.

These are the only other noticeable wear spots on the 1-2 and 3-4 sliders. You can still feel the machined groves on the 1-2 slider, 3-4 is noticeably smoother.

Here's the wear on shift fork #1 3-4 slider.

And here's the wear on shift fork #2, 1-2 slider.
Previous owner said there was an occasional grind into third until he put high dollar synthetic in. Do you think this wear would cause that occasional grind?
All other gears and synchros look perfect.

Impressive that you got that far with those HF pullers and separators! I'd like to rebuild a W56 (if I can find a spare locally). The other recent thread on this (which I think you were posting in as well) the guy used some very nice very expensive long jaw puller. Do you have a press or is this all done with the pullers?

This was all done with those three jaw pullers and that bearing separator. I will be using a press for the rest. I wanted to see how cheap I could do this with the thought that if I royally screw this up, it won't sting as bad. I feel as though the vail of black magic that is transmissions is slowly being lifted...
I had been looking for a spare locally for a while.
So far I'm at $380 spent, less than half of local rebuild quotes and a third of a marlin rebuild. Pricing out a new 5th with counter, #1 shift fork, 3-4 slider is around $200. Still well under a local or marlin rebuild. Fingers crossed it all works out...

That 5th gear looks ok to me. I might just take a file to it to soften the edges of it. The wear on the shift forks doesn't look that bad but you'll need to measure the gap between shift hub sleeve and fork to know for sure.. I'm shock you got it that far apart with those snap ring pliers. some of those snap rings are really beefy. Nice job. looking like you are well on your way.

You may want to either file/grind the 5th gear removing any sharp edges or look for a used gear. I'm lucky to have a transmission shop that also has a huge inventory of used parts.

Right on, those were my thoughts too. Would hate to get it all back together and have an issue with fifth.
Hey ozir, what do you recommend for assembly lube and break in oil?

I just run standard gear oil to break in the bearings. I don't know if this really matters but then I switch to synthetic. I just use the gear oil as assembly lube

Count me in on this game. I have an R150F trans that I want to rebuild, but before launching into that, with zero experience on transmissions, I think I will tear into a G52 transmission that I have left over from my 1984 Xtra Cab 4 x 4. I still have the 1984 FSM, I have a hydraulic press, and I have a Harbor Freight store close by. What could go wrong

An excuse to buy more tools is always welcome around here too .

That said, do you think
this snap ring pliers set this snap ring pliers set
from OTC would be suitable for this work? The pliers themselves, are each 16 inches long! I'd be interested to know how they compare with what you got from Snap On.

Right on! I''m potentially taking my w56 and rebuild kit over to the father in law's shop this weekend to use the press and make a plate to press fifth back on. Depending on axial play, I might have to order new snap rings from Toyota. So we'll see. The experience I had with snap ring pliers like the ones you posted was that they bent and/or broke when trying to remove the snap rings. The ones I picked up from pep-boys worked without breaking. The snap rings are seriously heavy duty.
Ozzir, are you using that plate for fifth gear in conjunction with those bearing puller/separators? That's my plan after looking at the specialty tool suggested by the FSM.

Can you post up some more info about the snap ring pliers. A picture would help and/or a part number. We don't have Pep Boys in Wisconsin, but just 21 miles away, in Illinois, there is a Pep Boys.

Retails for around $22.00, but hard to find in stock. Found it for $10 from an eBay seller, with free shipping. I should have it by early next week. Advance Auto offers it with a limited lifetime warranty. I am looking forward to see if I can get that kind of warranty.

I have some good neighbors too. One is a retired Honda dealership mechanic who was their in-house transmission specialist. Another is a master marine mechanic (I live in the heart of boat country). And the Snap On dealer lives just over on the next block. The marine mechanic and the Snap On dealer are good friends. The marine mechanic is able to borrow pretty much anything that he doesn't already have from the Snap On guy, and together they always tell me, "Don't buy that tool! Whatever you need you can borrow from us." But of course, when I can afford it, I buy the tool.

Well I got this w56 all put back together a month or so back but just installed it last week. She shifts beautifully, no poping out of 1st, grinding into 3rd, or clicking in 5th, and is super quite. Not the best at taking pics while working, here’s why 5th was clicking... sorry for the thread jack ozzir, thanks for the inspiration.

5th gear from the w56 that was in the truck. Wheeled and drove this thing for 2-3 years with a 5th gear that would click when on throttle.
