So I had some time to get in the shop today and got the rest of the trans apart. First you are going to press the first gear hub and bearing off. watch for this little ball when pressing off first gear. I keep my magnet close by to grab it. This is what you wind up pressing off

Now press off the 3rd gear and clutch hub. And in case you didn't remove this snap ring make sure you do before trying to press it off

This is the main input bearing next to 4th gear. press off the bearing. Again make sure you have removed the snap ring before pressing the bearing off

Now The FSM manual shows measuring the thickness on these 2 flanges. The flange on the shaft should have a minimum thickness of 5.6 mm. The inner race flange should have a minimum thickness of 4.7 mm

The FSM shows measuring runout on the shaft. I don't have a way to measure this or the oil clearance either. I do measure the synchro clearance with the new synchros. I can't see tearing a trans this far down and not replacing all bearings and synchros. The minimum clearance for all synchros is .5 mm. it should be between .7 -1.7 mm

OK, I am done for a while. I need to source some bearings and gaskets. Last time I used a kit from Marlin crawler but the kit was 300$. I have found some on e-bay for 100. That show all synchros, gaskets, and bearings. It looks like they use Nachi bearings like Toyota did originally. I may try one of these kits. I'll keep you posted. It may be a few weeks before I get to the re-assembly. I put my truck up in the air to check trans and t/c levels. I have about 1500 miles on the trans and everything looks good no leaks. I did use the Marlin short throw shifter and twist and click t-case shifter. Anyone driving these trucks with the 22re knows it isn't a performance motor so the short throw shifter is a litlle overkill but it sure does clean up the shifting and no dumb oe spacers on the shifter

Have you ever been inside a Toyota "R" series transmission? If you have, I would be interested in hearing how they compare, as far as working on them goes.

And thank you for taking the time to document your work and post in the forum. I have been looking for something like this. I want to try my hand at transmission rebuilding. I am fortunate enough to have a neighbor who is a retired Honda dealership mechanic, who was a transmission specialist. offered to help me learn. <BTW> I live just down the road from you. In Lake Geneva, actually.

Sorry for the delay but I changed jobs and have been way too busy but in the next month or so I should be starting the rebuild. Just wanted to let anyone following this I'll be back at it soon.

Yes wrenchtech you are pretty close to me. I've been up to Lake Geneva many, many times. again sorry for the delay, but no I have never had an R series trans apart. I know my FSM covers the R series as well

I've done this twice now, first was a shattered input shaft. Now I need to do it again...... So where did you get the internals? I know the third is going to hurt, its locked up solid with busted metal.

I should be ordering my bearing kit in the next week or 2. I have bee trying to sell my Toyota so I haven't been in a rush. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. How is your rebuild going? Where did you wind up getting your bearing kit from?

I just got this transmission last night. Wanted to look inside rather than just take the cl sellers word for it. All gears and synchros look great, the bearings have a fair amount of slop side to side. Need to go through the FSM this weekend and check tolerances. Then either pick up the tools you listed, or find cheaper equivalents, and then either pick up the marlin rebuild kit or an equivalent with NSK bearings.
Have you decided on a kit yet?
I found this kit https://cobratransmission.com/toyota...kit-50048011-1
Doesn't state what brand bearings. Do you have any opinions on it?
Also, I did some internet searching and read that marlin suggests to make all tolerances on the tighter side. Makes sense to me, what are your thoughts on that?

I just looked at the kit from cobra, looks complete. As for the quality of the bearings as long as they are not some Chinese imported junk you should be fine. All the bearing makers make quality parts, as long as they are Timkin, BCA, SKF, KOYO or Nachi. I believe most of the bearings I have pulled out of my 2 w56's have been Nachi and NSK. I prefer to use OE suppliers.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-W55-...!US!-1&vxp=mtr
This is the kit I will most likely use this time, Looks complete all bearings are NSK and Nachi. 129 with shipping.

As for the tool's I would make you the same offer I made to Corey. If you want to borrow my tools I would be willing to lend them out. But I would require a deposit of 600 through pay pal then refund when the tools are returned. The tools cost me more then 600. I tried doing it with regular pullers and snap ring pliers and just didn't work well. so I purchased a heavy duty Snap-on snap ring pliers kit, 225, and 2 posi lock pullers, 400, and one OTC puller pusher, 125, and I still had to make one piece for pulling and pushing on the gear for 5th. I have seen guys do it with basic tools but having the right ones makes it much, much easier. I just figured I would offer

As for the bearing tolerances it makes sense. I just set mine right in the middle. I am sure Marlin has rebuilt way more transmissions than I have
