Vortec V6 or LS1 V8
Looks like my 3VZE has died again and I'm not putting another dime in this POS.
So, big question becomes which of the Chevy's should I go with?
I'd really like that LS1, but know it means gutting the driveline, whereas the Vortec can be done and not need a whole new truck to handle the power.
Opinions?

V8 baby... There is no replacement for displacement.
I might suggest a milder tuned V8 though. Something that will give you tons of torque still, but not break as much and be more reliable.
I am planning on a V8 swap next year as well.

are you kidding?? LS1!!!
LS1 equipped cars TA's and Camaros routinely get upwards of 25mpg! In a suv that will wieghs 800lbs heavier the milage shouldnt be too much different. Aside from that have any of you seen an LS1 block? Bulletproof! 6 bolt mains! Stock bottom ends have zero issues holding 500+ hp, and the aftermarket is DEFINATELY there too! Heck a bone stock LS1 can support a 125 dry shot of nitrous, the ECU has that much adjustability in stock form!!
Eitehr and LS1 (or LS2 ) or a 2JZ-GTE is my vote!

The LS2...what's different? Can they be found with the 4L60E? What year did they come in?
Thanks for the offer on the stickshift, but I'm tired of shifting, time for an auto.
I'm really considering two donor vehicles. One car for the LS1, trans, electronics & interior and a truck for the 4x4 stuff. Basicly all GM, though I'm not opposed to some Ford & Dodge if it's appropriate.
Only thing left of the Toy would be the shell & frame.
Maybe an airride suspension so I could slam it for highway mileage

The LS2 was introduced in 2005 in Pontiac's 2005 GTO and 2005 and up corvette as well as the SSR.
It displaces 6.0L and produces 400ftlbs/400hp, has a 6500rpm redline, has a 10.9:1 CR, and has true flat top pistons.
Aparrently the higher CR, flat top pistons, and unshrouded valves inproves efficiency and the LS2 is reported to have better fuel economy than the LS1!!
here is an AWSOME read about hte LS2!

IMO, LS1/2 in a yota is way more money and effort than its worth... but if you're loaded, i guess go for it
and as for that 25MPG, not gunna happen... in a heavier, less aerodynamic vehicle with bigger tires...

LS1s can be found for about 2000 online. Heck you can find LS1/4L60-e's on ebay right now for 3800. Now effort side of things I dont know but it cant be that bad since it was a swap that was documented over on 4x4...or was it pirate? In either case its been done and doesnt require that you be "loaded" by any means. LS2s are a different story however with them only being 2 years old....
My 3vze used to get 25mpg on highway if I could keep my foot out of the gas, so I have NO doubts that an LS1 can accomplish 20+ with the same driving technique, which is what I was getting at. Hell my 3vze would still get 20mpg with bigger tires, stock gearing, and a 600lb sound system in the back on highway before the HG popped at 275,000...
