Hey everyone, I just bought an 86 Toyota 2wd truck and am considering swapping out the 22r. Then the idea of putting the engine in my Volvo in the truck. They are both 4 cylinders and I imagine they weigh about the same. Some questions is there an adapter available to mate the toyota 5 speed to the B230ft? How difficult could the swap be? Is having a turbo engine going to pose a big problem in the truck? Should I consider using the AW71 to keep the coolent lines going to the turbo? Lots to think about, any ideas?

I was just thinking about it because the Volvo engine is putting out 225whp and 258wtq at the time and is very reliable. Also the carb on the 22r is sticking a bit. I will clean it tomorrow and see if that takes care of it, but I am just brain storming because I havent seen a Volvo 4 banger swapped into a Toyota truck yet.

probably for a good reason lol...... anyway welcome to the club. the 22r aint too fast, but its super reliable. i mean on my 22re i have almost 280,000 and ive beat the living hell out of it, and its still asking for more. (the odo says 256, but the actual mileage is closer to 280). my truck is a prime example that the R series motors are a very strong very reliable motor. theyre workhorses, not racehorses.

Thanks for the welcome. Maybe I should just start with different gearing. I am under the impression that I need something like 4.56 gears to compensate for my 31 in tires. Is it true that I need to swap out an axle from a 1 ton truck with a four speed and then change out the third member from 4wd truck? How would I do this for cheap?

Are you talking about making it 4wd? If so then you need to change a lot. You need a new oil pan and basically the entire front end out of a 4wd. Or you could sas it and then you just need the sas kit, front axle, and a transfer case. (these are the basics you will need a lot more stuff). oh and a driveshaft.

I don't want it to be 4wd. I just want a well geared off road capable 2wd truck that I can take out on the Oregon Dunes as well as some mild trails.

Should be able to get gears for the 2wd in various ratios.

Just to add a little info, I have an '83 Volvo GLT wagon with 340k miles on it with no rebuild. It is starting to burn a little oil, but I should be able to get at least 400k before I have to contemplate a rebuild.

The B-20 series engines are VERY reliable. I'm not sure that I'd consider putting one in my truck, but I'd be hard pressed to argue against it, either.

86 came with a factory turbo, so legally you can do it and pass smog, im not sure if colorado is the same as cali, one of the reason i bought my 87 is because i can stick a turbo on it and have no smog issues, hopefully.

One the other hand, i have a buddie who plays with volvo engines, he has a 86 i think factory turbo and 5 speed wagon making something like 500 hp and 550 tq and is smog legal on pump gas, out of a 4 banger....

i think the same thing every time i drive my wife's 850 turbo volvo (5 cyl 220 horsepower) that car really hauls ass, stock.

it surely be easier to make the volvo into a truck.

ive seen a volvo wagon made into a pickup truck.

4.56 is ideal for 31s, but lots of people live with 4.10s and 31s. 4.56 was available as a factory ratio, so you can just swap out the entire differential rather than pull it out and do a gear swap.

No reason for a 1 ton axle.
No reason for a 4 speed.

No conversions to volvo that I know of.... never seen or heard of it being done.
