Vibration at 60mph and above
 

All,

I have a vibration only when de-accelerating from 60mph or above. Before anyone suggests this, I just replaced u-joints which didn't fix the problem. I have had this problem ever since I swapped my auto tranny with another from a V6 (don't know if that matters).

Any suggestions?

un-balanced D-shaft...? did you make sure you put ur D shaft back in the way it came out? both times?? if not it only goes 2 ways, rotate 180 and see if it works...i just had the same prob but my D-shaft was bent and had bad u joints and made ALOT more noise/ vibration when decelerating....

Drive line un-balanced? Trouble with wheel balance? Ball joints getting lose? Did you assemble the drive shafts with the yokes in the same place as they were when you disassembled?

What end does it seam to be coming from? A bit more info will give people a better idea of what is going on, and give you better idea's of what to start checking.

if your truck sags too much, like mine did, then the pinion angle might be thrown off. When i put in AAL's my trucks rear-end vibration completely disappeared.

Yes I reassembled exactly the way I took it apart. As stated earlier, this vibration started before I changed u-joints. I think the vibration is coming from the front end of the driveshaft or the tranny (too hard to tell while driving). I will place the truck on stands tomorrow and try to see if I can narrow the sound down better.

yoterr: how did u bend ur driveshaft? And can I eyeball something like that?

put a levelling stick, or something of equivalent straight-ness on the driveline..

if the driveline is bent, you'll know.

ok, update:

I have narrowed the vibration to either the driveshaft or the rear diff. I'm leaning towards the rear diff. The question I have is: if it was the rear diff, I don't know what could be wrong in there. I had all new bearings and races put in along with an aussie locker (All done by prof. mechanic)

I have had metal shavings show up on the magnetic fill plug ever since the locker was installed ..... does that mean something bad?

When is the last time you had your tires balanced? Are you by chance missing a wheel weight, or maybe have some extra mud in the wheels?? Depending where you bought the tires, you may have a warranty that will let you have them checked at no cost, or the worst case it should be cheap even if you have to pay. If that isn't the problem, have the drive line balanced. If that's not the trouble, it may be the gears.

If the diff is the cause of the vibe, the installer might have made a booboo during installation.

How much, and what does the metal look like? Big chunks or tiny flakes, slivers?
I'm not familiar with the locker you run, so I'll let some one who runs that locker answer.

This vibration started after swapping trannys (not saying that's the cause because the truck sat awhile before the swap.) The shavings are EXTREMELY fine, like silver dust collected on the magnet. When I stick my finger in the rear diff, I can't see any shavings, but they keep showing up on the magnet after I drive it.

Orbital02, I also have a vibration only when de-accelerating from 60mph or above. But my vehicle is a 2000 4runner with automatic and 4 cylinder. Just started 2 days ago. The 4runner is bone stock. So far I have changed the trans fluid - it was brownish , apparently overdue. Rotated and balance the tires. No change so far. I was wanting to see if you have made any progress with your 4runner.

Buckeye, i would say change ur u-joints on the rear driveshaft. thats the most common cause of this vibration. the reason i know that wont help me is because i changed mine only a month before this started. plus i think its the locker acting up.
