Valve cover hose leak
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.yot...2cf3c66e8.jpeg I just had the valve covers done not long ago. I this was the only source of a small oil leak but I am finding the tube that goes into the cam covers from the air intake is leaking out a small amount. To be clear the tube going in on the drivers side next to the oil fill cap. What causes this. I have read that it may be a bad pcv ? I do see that people will swap this hose with a air intake looking item. If one does this what is done with the air hose coming from air intake. Not sure because the threads I have read don’t show a picture. |
Loading a small amount of oil from here |

This hose permits clean filtered air into the crankcase to balance the air volume that the PCV system sucks out.
It certainly can't hurt to change the PCV valve if it is higher mileage, and that might help, but it is also a fact that the more worn an engine becomes, the more blowby gasses it produces, until eventually, the PCV system can no longer exert negative pressure on the crankcase. These things being said, the small oil spots you see at this hose are irrelevant. If they bother you, wipe those areas down with a rag with some solvent on it. It'll be a while before the seeps are apparent again. Those little filters you see that people put on valve covers are not the way to go. Fogeddabouddit. |
Thank you for the reply. The valve covers were cleaned pretty well when I had the seals done. So while it’s not gushing oil has put a thin layer on in about 300 miles. I will replace the valve as stated and report back. Is this a difficult job ? |
On the 3VZ engine it is not so easy. The valve is in the passenger side valve cover and both its hose and the grommet get hardened by heat and time.
Most often, the intake plenum is removed to change the PCV valve, grommet and hose, although I have heard that it might be possible to get it done without plenum removal. I changed my PCV parts when I resealed the covers after I did a valve lash adjustment. Three jobs in one shot. Your mechanic did you a big disservice by not addressing this when the valve covers were resealed, as I'm pretty sure he had to remove the plenum to do that work. |
