Unhooking Air Conditioner unit

I was curious if there are any tricks to unhooking the AC unit on an 92 SR5 V6 Truck? I know it is under compression and I am in the process of pulling out the engine. I have gotten to the AC system and am wondering if any of you out there that have done this before could lend me some suggestions!

Usually you can just unbolt it from the engine and pull it off to the side. Leave the hoses attached and just disconnect the wire for the clutch.

If you can pull the motor w/out removing the A/C compressor, Do It!!! It is a pain to take the copressor out unless you have the tools they cost $1000 + you will have to pay to have someone else do it. Swing the copressor out of the way and tie it back with tie wire. You will be glad you did.

I have to unhook it eventually... I know I could pull the engine without undoing it but since the vehicle I am pulling it from will no longer run again I will have to undo it at sometime so I figure I might as well do it before I pull the engine. I am not worried about losing the compression as I will just have to have it recharged when it is reinstalled in a different vehicle. Should I just go to one of the hoses and let it go?

You should have it discharged by some one who can recover the r-12 (save the earth) but if that person is not around, on the compresor there are 2 caps on fill points. Under the cap is a valve that is the same as a valve in a tire stem. To let the gas out push on the center pin in the valve but use a long wire to push the pin as the gas will be very cold. You might want to do it out side vs in a garage. Call a few A/C shops first they can resell the r-12 and may remove it for free because r-12 is about $40 on ounce or some thing like that. Good luck!

Just an FYI: Those are called Schraeder valves. I don't know where I pick up these nifty little pieces of trivia. My poor ol' brain is chock full of meaningless garbage like that...

Damn - glad I SEARCHED this subject!! I'm also in the process of yanking an engine - I plan to use the 3VZ AC compressor on my 1UZ. My system is already out of freon - quit working last fall.

Mr. Mud - you are telling us that to remove the compressor from the system requires tools that cost $1000?? That seems both extreme and unlikely. Anyone else done this with normal hand tools?

If the system is empty, it is easy to remove the compressor. Just loosen the hose fittings and pull it out. If the system is full, you'll want to have a shop evacuate the system to remove the Freon first. That is probably the high-busk tooling refered to.
