Truck turns over but won't start -please help
I recently bought a 1989 toyota truck for my 16 year old son. The first day I had it the power steering started severely leaking. The previous owner changed the power steering pump himself but did not change the high pressure hose. I decided to install a new high pressure hose myself. In the process of changing it, I may have messed something up that caused my truck not to start anymore. It turns over really well but it acts almost as if it's not getting any gas. Here's what I may have done wrong:
1. While trying to remove the high pressure hose from the power steering pump, the socket ratchet I was using touched the positive battery post a couple of times causing a spark.
2. I noticed that one of the two vacuum lines that go into the vacuum valve located on the power steering pump broke off.
3. While replacing the high pressure hose, I removed the airflow meter and filter assembly to have better access to the lower part of the hose. However, instead of just disconnecting the electrical wire prong, I unscrewed it from the assembly...realizing that there were a nest of wires coming from behind the connector, I quickly screwed it back in and disconnected it from the prong instead.
I've checked every fuse I can think of to check and all were good. Could it be the starter relay, since I grounded out to the battery or another relay? Could it be a fuse that I didn't check, if so, which one? Could it be that one of the air flow meter wires got disconnected? I don't think the disconnected power steering vacuum line would prevent it from starting but then again, I'm not a mechanic. The truck started before I worked on it and now it won't. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

As I recall, there were three small bolts holding the whole filter/afm assembly in place. The only connections to the assembly that I recall were the wire prong that connects to the afm, the air duct from the outside to the assembly and the air duct from the engine to the assembly. The truck is at my son's mother's house, so unfortuantely, I can't easily go and look at it. Are there any other connectors that I might of missed besides the ones I just mentioned? Thanks Mr. Utah!

I did the same mistake a few days ago. All it takes is a slight nudge and it's damaged. You're going to have to solder the joints back or replace the AFM entirely. Lucky for me, I found an AFM for $25 on craigslist.
If you need further help on that AFM, look here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...nation-226336/

Thanks for the reply. It makes me feel more confident of what the problem is. I've been sick the last couple of days and haven't had a chance to drive over and look at it again. Thanks again!

I can tell you from my own Yota woes: check for any diagnostic codes. Plenty of posts on here describing how to do it. I'll look it up in my FSM just to make sure I give you the right info, just let me know. But like another poster said, you may have jacked up the AFM by unscrewing the screws and pulling the terminal. That little wire clip holders the plug, so just use a small screwdriver or pick tool and unclip, then remove the plug.

I wanted to let everyone know that I've resolved the problem with my son's truck. I ordered a replacement VAFM and installed it today. What a nice surprise when she started right up! Thanks so much for everyone's help. Sincerely!
