Truck now blows heavy smoke

Just a quick question before I go and replace the engine... Ugh!!!!!

My truck has what I suspect to be a bad valve seal and burns a little oil on the number 5 cylinder. (Drivers side rear most cylinder)
It has been like this for a while and when it starts to miss, I just put a new plug in and let it eat...
This is been the case for a while until yesterday.

Yesterday, I had been driving on the highway and came to an off ramp and a stop light. The truck idled for a few minutes and when I went to leave from the light, I literally smoked out the entire intersection....

What would cause this instant excessive burning of oil????

My thought was a stuck PCV valve..

Truck runs fine otherwise.. Just blows heavy smoke after sitting at a light.. Nothing much if any can be seen while driving at regular road speeds...

Any help would be appreciated.. Trying not to replace the engine right now.

Thanks.

I can't imagine what would cause the engine to suddenly start pouring blue smoke out except a broken valve or ring, or maybe a hole in the piston; any of which would cause a rough running engine. A compression check per the FSM would help narrow down the problem to upper or lower part of the engine. It sounds like the heads need to come off regardless of the cause, but if you narrow it down to the block you should remove the heads after the engine is pulled.

Sure sounds like some work ahead of you, but it's all fun stuff. Good luck,
Bugs
