I've got an '89 Toyota 4x4 pickup with a 22RE from an '89 4Runner. When I go up a steep hill the truck bucks hard. It surges and then starves and eventually loses all power. It's especially bad in 4L. If I gun it really hard and take the hill at full speed, I can sometimes make it up. I can also turn around and back up steep hills no problem. I replaced the fuel pump and fixed some leaking gas lines around the tank a little while before the problem started. I live at the top of a long steep gravel driveway and backing up is getting old. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How full is your tank? Have you checked the fuel pick ups in the tank?
Just an idea. Mine had similar issues

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the amount of gas in the tank doesn't seem to affect it. It bucks when it is full or close to empty.

Sounds like a fuel supply issue, you will need to isolate it at the tank or the motor.

About how many degrees is the hill we talking about?

X2 on the filter. had one on my Yukon go bad and thought the trans was going out. it broke apart on the inside and everytime i poor the coal to it it would'nt shift out mechanic friend told me the computer would'nt let it shift because the pressure would cause the inner's of the filter to slam against the outlet side and it would throw a code to the computer. not the same as a Yota but still the same principal

I also wanna know the angle of the hill, only did it once but stalled a v6 auto on a severe grade. Dont know exact angle, but was steep enough that the hitch hit without the reciever in it. Will head back to it soon and take a pic so it can be seen. Subscribing to thread...

The hill is not extremely steep. It's too steep to go up in RWD, but the truck used to make it up fine in 4WD.

I already changed the fuel filter, but it didn't help.

I'm hesitant to drop the tank again because it's a rusty mess under there and I seem to break something every time I do it. If the problem were in the motor, any suggestions as to where it might be?

So is any of that rust inside the tank? Like dropzone said, check the pickup for the fuel pump, also I would check the fuel pressure and make sure it is all good.

Mine has the 3vze, and does the same thing. I think it is the fuel pump going out.

Mine also does it as well. I opened up the circuit opening relay and cleaned the contacts. Still does it. My next step is to open up the AFM and see if any contacts are shorting out when at a steep angle. I tested it on level ground and it checked out ok
