Trouble Starting
I have a 22r toyota 1986 or 87 can't quite remember off top of my head. But when i first start the truck up it is a pain and often needs to be cranked over multiple times. After the first intial start-up the truck will start first try. What could be wrong?

Carburated I assume?
|
yes sir.

I was going to suggest a fuel pressure issue, but since you have a carb I dont know. When having starting issues always make sure that you cover the basics first. Plugs. timing, rotor, cap, plugs, plug wires. If those are ok then maybe someone with more carb knowledge can comment. Does the truck start poorly only when it is cold? How is your gas mileage holding up?

The carb was worked on recently, seemed to not help besides fixing my idle issue. Motor was rebuilt a while back.2003 ish

Last tune up?
|
Does it happen each time it sets over night ,and gets worst if it sets for few days ? If so the carb is losing fuel out of the bowl. check the fuel level on site glass when you park it ,then check it again before starting. If it is a lot lower it is time for a rebuild. I tried to fix mine with out a kit and it was a waist of time. My truck ran fine except for the first start up in the mourning.

:good:
That is why I wanted to confirm that he had a carburetor, and that the condition is not just a cold start condition. I have seen the same condition that you described on fuel injection when the fuel line is losing pressure over night. |
last tune up was probably the rebuild, so a long time ago, i had the carb adjusted last weekend, has been starting pretty good in the mornings since

Tune ups are an easy way to learn about your car. If you live near San Jose bring it by and we can do it together.

aha i'd love to come by....but im in Virginia:d

Say hi to my son who is stationed in Norfolk.

Have you pulled the plugs yet? try doing that and seeing what color they are it can tell alot about what going on.

^^^ Good call new guy. Welcome to Yota Tech.

My problem.is I don't know much about vehicles:d slowly learning more and more all the time.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks a tune up fixes thinks but it does not. modern cars don't need tune up for 100k.
Your problem is related to 1 of 2 things, fuel or spark. in the morning before you start the truck spray carb cleaner in the carb. only about 1 second. if it fires right up, it's fuel. same slow start it's spark. The correct proceedure for a carburated car start is to pump the throttle 1-2 times then crank it. |

Well i haven't got to putting stuff in the carb yet, but this morning it acted like it was on, i quit turning the key, and it was off. Then it was hard to start after that and i had to use the clutch safety cancel button(my clutch is about shot).

When you do the carb cleaner test report back to us. We care.:D
