Transmission Terror.. 3rd and 4th went out.

my 89 4runner with a v6 3.0efi A/T w/ OD had a few issues today.
I was driving fine then when it shifted from 2nd to 3rd it slipped and let it spin like 3000-3500rpms, after two slips then it just spun like it was in Neutral which was in my O.D. gear. So i turned OD off and it was fine, just slipped into third. So 5 mins later then 3rd spins like its in Netural and if i rev-ed it to like 4000-5000rpms it would jerk really hard then pick up but if i let off the gas it lost the gear again. So.. im not very car smart. But i know if I keep it in L (1st) or 2 it will do fine. If i put it in D the shift from 2 to 3 causes all the problems

This is my only vehicle what do i do???

They are electronically shifted. It sounds like you are having an issue with the computer perhaps.

Do what Abe suggested and check your fluid levels first, make sure its not all burned up, then move on to the ECU. Does it do it with it in "normal" mode, if you manually shift?

It will do fine shifting in and out but once its in 3rd it just fells like N. And the fulid smells funky, but it looks clean however...

the dipstick is like this
----------------------------------------**
-----------^ cold ^-------^ hot ^------** and its up to there (where the ** is )

so its like way above. I checked it while running on a flat surface. not sure how to check my filter..

If this makes any difference this truck has like no power what so ever, if i manually shifted it (which ive been doing) it can scoot a little bit, but if i let it shift on my own then it would just be sooo slugish almost like it shifted too soon. However its been like that for a year (about 7000mi)

Considering if the fluid was at the correct level before, the high reading on the stick suggests the fluid is getting hot, likely being caused by slipping clutch packs... possibly the converter.
If after verifying the ATF cooling system was working properly, the next thing I would be looking at doing is replacing / rebuilding the transmission and converter.

how long have you had the truck? have you ever had the transmission serviced? because if those are original miles on the transmission that is a long time.

woah.. rebuilding... the "A.T. Temp" light doesnt come on, and it had been running and driving for 1hr prior to checking the fluid. Also Im not sure how to check the cooling system for my ATF... But if it needs rebuilt i'll just have to throw this thing to the junkyard which would kill me, and prolly everyone else on here...

I'm gonna drive it with 1 and 2 cuz I HAVE to have something to drive.. Any ideas on how to make it last. And btw consider that if i really rev it high, 3rd will kick in, but as soon as i let off the gas it wont work. I havent drove it since i parked it earlier today, so i havent tried driving it cold.

never had it serviced, but bought it from a mechanic that just rebuilt the head gasket. I would assume that he would have checked the A/T and Fluids out before selling it.

well the truck is not really worth fixing but i have to have something to drive and i have like $200 thats all. I have a 89 Chevy Silverodo thats been sitting for 3 years, recently been getting it running but still got a way to go on it. just didnt expect this to happen thought i could depend on that 4runner... I'll keep driving it in 2 and just have to stay on the side roads.. What would it run me to find a used A/T and get some one cheap to install it...
Thanks so much for all the help

yes its 4wd with the IFS. And i have someone who will help me do it for dirt cheap.

Just need to know the best place to find a used tranny...
And in the morning ill give it a cold test drive, and see if maybe i can get 3rd and 4th working till it warms up, if they act up ill just keep it in 2. i got school and work tommorrow though and i have to be there.
Ill post my findings

you have the kick down cable to the throttle body, correct?
MAYBE it's loose and / or not adjusted properly.
(just trying to help you get a little more out of it)
