Transmission temp question

I have a '91 auto pickup and my rad blew yesterday. I have a parts truck in the yard but it is a manual and doesn't have the tranny lines in the rad. My question is could I bypass the cooler and drop the other rad in to get me to work for a couple days while I get the other rad fixed without putting to much heat to the tranny?

short answer yes.

the integrated trans cooler in the radiator cools as well as warms up the trans on cold start.

keep this in mind when you drive without the benefits of the radiator.

i would extend your warm up time before driving AND be carefull not to put too much heat in the trans when driving.

i think if you put a trany cooler on you would be fine, might be cheaper than a rad.

I was also considering this if i can find one that fits the truck easily and isn't to costly.

i got mine from JEGS.

it was a JEGS brand cooler, so i was glad when it came in a hayden box. good stuff.

if you get a new rad, i bought a CSF 3 core all metal (brass copper) when i did my swap.
no problems so far, maybe 3k mi so far.

Just grab a Hayden 405 at your local parts store. Big, 8 pass cooler and bypass the radiator all together.

Also, FWIW, the radiator does NOT help warm up the tranny. That is a myth. The tranny will actually heat up much faster than your coolant on very cold mornings. I have seen these on pretty much every vehicle I have ever owned and I run tranny temp gauges on all of them. On 15* mornings, I would start my old 4runner up. Tranny would be at 100* within 5-6 lights. Engine temp would be well below that still.

Call 1-800-radiator. I had them price match an off brand eBay radiator, got a csf for my 82 for like 95 shipped. Maybe you can get a good deal to?
