Transmission Swap Question
Hi Everyone,
I have a 93 extended cab 4X4 pickup that has the R150F and the 3.0 V6.. The V6 is gone. I just got a 94 runner. Its a 4X4 with the 22RE. Will the R150F Trans bolt right into the Runner ?? I'm trying to find a reason to keep the Transmission. The other reason I'd like to keep it is I have a 2L-T diesel that fits the R150F Transmission. Finding the bell housing was difficult. So if that's something I can Eventually use in the Runner.... Thanks Clancy |
I'm pretty sure it won't bolt up directly; Toyota never put the R150F behind the 22re. Advance Adapters will sell you an adapter kit to do it for about $500.

The R150F is basically the best transmission for these trucks.
Make it work. It has a really nice low first gear too. Lower than those "street car" transmission. All you need is a R151F turbo bell housing, really. It has to be 88-95 R150F that mated to the 3VZ 3.0 though. The 96 up R150F that mates to the 5VZFE 3.4 has a longer input shaft and will stick out too far in the R151F bell housing. Do own research before buying parts though, please. |
What transmission came with the 94 22re? you are gonna need to think about the transfercase too
|
Good point about the tcase. If he gets the correct adapter for the engine, he should be able to just bolt the R150 and the VF1A chain drive case in as a unit. Might have to modify the rear tcase mount to make it fit properly. Not sure about drive shaft lengths.
For 95% of applications, the chain drive case is better than the older gear drive ones. It's quieter, shifts easier, and has a lower lo-range. Plenty strong for anything a 22re can deliver. There are adapters to do all of this stuff, just costs money... |
ev13wt,
Thank you. Yes I agree.. Its a great transmission. This transmission was mated to a 93 3VZE. The original plan was to set a 2L-T Toyota Diesel in the 93 Pickup. That proved to be very difficult. I recently purchased the 94 Runner with the 22RE in it. The 2L-T Is Suppose to fit right in place of the 22RE. Minor changes. Exhaust has to be moved to the passenger side. change out the radiator. the connection are reversed. ECT. So the bell housing I have fits between the R150F and the 2L-T. That particular bell housing was very hard to find. So If I can make that all fit in the Runner without doing a Cut and paste. That would be great. |
