Transmission swap - connector on transmission 1989 4 runner

My friend is trying to install a junkyard trans into his 4runner. After getting everything done, they found that a connector is different than on the original transmission.

Can you tell me what this sensor/connector is? How to remove it? and if the part is interchangeable from year to year?

He removed the mounting bolt and said that the unit will spin around but not pull out of the transmission.

Thanks!!

just out of curiousity

I have an 1989 MANUAL trans 4Runner.
It has a build date of 12/88
It is of the 1988 body style, not the later Gen2 1990 body style

It has a mish mash of older and newer parts.
The 22RE is the later style
The trans is a W56B earlier style

This causes all kinds of confusion at the parts counter.
I wonder if that is what happened here - that you have an 1988 style transmission, not a 1990 style
and when 1989 was specified, they sent a 1990 style, not a 1988 style

Maybe so and probably likely. He doesnt know the exact model of the new transmission. If the transmissions are not interchangeable from year, then thats probably what has happened.

So for now, we just need to figure out what that part is, and if it can be swapped for the one in his old transmission.

The FSM for my 1989 Gen1 4Runner seems to show that item as the "Neutral Start Switch"

To get it off, it seems you have to manually shift the trans using the control lever - all the way back and return 2 notches
Then its in neutral

The FSM has a few spots where it calls out a difference for the 3.0L engine vs the 2.4L engine, but overall there is only ONE auto trans manual
