Transfer case: ATF or Gear oil? Also a transmission capacity question.
Hey, I've got a 1986 4x4 SR5 (Manual 5 spd) that I've been doing a bunch of preventative maintenance on. I'm currently changing all the fluids but have a few questions about transfer case and transmission oils.
Transfer Case: I'm not sure what to put in here. The Toyota dealer and the folks at NAPA said Dexron II ATF, but AMSOIL suggests 75w-90 gear oil. I haven't been able to find information on the transfer case in the owners manual I have, and I don't have a factory service manual. I don't want to put the wrong thing in. Seems strange that a manual transmission would want ATF. Which should I use?
Transmission: I chose to go with AMSOIL 75w-90 gear oil and bought 3 quarts as the listed capacity for the transmission is 2.5 quarts. I drained the transmission, replaced the drain plug and begin filling, but after putting 3 quarts in, nothing has come out of the fill hole. If I stick my pinky in I can feel oil right near the top of the hole. What's going on here? Why would it need more than the stated capacity?
Thanks,
Loren

Don't know which transmission you have, but the R150F requires 3.0 liters which is about 3.3 qts., so at 3 qts you would expect to be slightly below the fill hole.
Definitely use 75W-90 gear oil, not ATF. Also, GL-4 will make for smoother shifts than GL-5. GL-5 won't hurt it, but it's too slick for the synchronizers to grab properly, making for hard shifting. Same goes for the Tcase.
