Trans Problem

My transmission will pop out of first gear when under load, usually if you hold the shifter, it will not pop out. Yesterday, it popped even when I had my hand on the shifter. The shifter also has a lot of movement in the 1st 3rd and 5th gears, you can move the shifter in third gear, almost as much as neutral, and sometimes it slides out of third (not pops, just slides). In 5th the shifter shakes up and down when under increasing speed, but not when staying under one speed. Can anyone help me, do I need a whole new transmission or just a rebuild???????

BTW its a 22re, 4wd, 5spd(duh), reg cab, 1989, pickup

Yeah, they cost about $4 and are easy and quick to put in. Look up Bob's post in the maitenance repair section.

I read somewhere that a company (Marlin mebbe??) makes a nylon seat bushing that's practically indestructible. Might be a little more expensive, but will prolly not wear out until the gears in the tranny do.

I have to agree with TC. And if you don't change it out it will tear up those synchros.....I was lazy and it happened to me.

Now it pops out of 3rd, and sometimes when you shift into the 3rd gear and let off of the clutch, it will grind, so I have to move the shifter and try again. This works sometimes, but its really hard to do in traffic, so I am going to get some estimates, I think I am just going to get a new transmission, or rebuild this one!

If you can ship it or live close get one from Marlin. My brother grenaded his transmission, and got the replacement form marlin a few years ago. Best thing he could have done that tranny was done up right. We also went and picked it up so he didnt have to ship it, and becuase we did he loaded us up with t-shirts and the such. Also gave us a run thru on what he did and why, and we got some up close looks @ some of the projects he had.
