Trans Oil Temp Light Came On-OD Switch Question

Last night while driving from Palm Springs to Banning (slight uphill grade) my trans oil temp light came on. I pulled off the freeway for a short while, the light went off, then I continued home with no issues. Maybe it was my fault because I didn't turn the OD off. I know when the trans is in overdrive and you go up a grade, it downshifts (or slips) causing the engine rpm to go up 500 rpm or so. My question is, do I need to turn off the OD every time I drive up a grade? What is happening in the trans when it downshifts in OD?

Specs- 91 4Runner 3.0, 152k mi, auto, new engine, new radiator, vehicle new to me.

Agreed... Does anyone know if you can "tap" into whatever temp sensor is on the transmission? I want to actually see my trans temperature

No you'd have the add a temp sending unit some where, the light is controlled by an idiot light type switch eg only active when it's over point X.

You could rig one up near the cooler inlet pretty easy.
