Tranny/Engine Oil Cooler Combo: Anyone???
 

Was looking at this to "kill a few birds" with my rebuild:

Would cool tranny and engine, while giving me a built in relocation of the filter so I don't have the "22RE mess." I know nothing of the Summit brand and/or it's reliability.

Any opinions? I know many of you use multiple coolers (Mt. Goat). Advice?

In general a tube and fin cooler doesn't cool as good as a stacked plate cooler. They tend to take up more space to get the same cooling, the good thing about them is they tend to have lower pressure drop.

I've gotten good products and service from Summit.

So would you recommend for my application? It's a 2wd (no crawling) that I only plan to do mild towing with (4x8 trailer, dirt bikes).

I guess I'm asking because, for the price, it almost seems too good to be true!

How much cooling do you need (how hot are the fluids)? Where are you wanting to put it?

Won't know fluid temps 'til rebuild is complete. Looking for insurance, really. Gets to be 110+ deg here.

Looking to put it behind the skid plate (sound familiar?), if I can figure a solid way to mount it with my limited tools. If not, then I guess onto the radiator somewhere.

Well I wouldn't buy it myself for several reasons. I don't really like the idea of using 3/8" hose barb fittings for engine oil, seems too small and scary to me. Its ok for the ATF.

I'd look for 1/2" fittings for 1/2" hoses for the engine oil, especially if you don't use a thermostat to control the flow because pressure spikes can be huge when reving an engine with cold oil. (10AN fittings are what I used).

Also that cooler doesn't have any frame for mounting it to the truck or for mounting a fan to it. It's also pretty small for a dual purpose cooler, again tube and fin coolers need to be bigger to get the same cooling as a stacked plate cooler. There are some tube and fin coolers that swirl the fluid around inside the tube and are more efficient though.

My interpretation: It IS too good to be true. My original intent when searching was for a tranny cooler, just thought this might be a bonus. Going back to my original idea of just getting a quality tranny cooler... stacked plate it is! Thanks!
