Tranny Cooler: How Big?
 

Fellas-

Any experience with what would be the largest recommended size I'd go on my 'Runner?

Can you go "too big" as far as cooling goes?

Gonna be doing mild towing, but I also live where satan suntans in the summer...:fire2:

Yes you can go to big. I bought a Hayden 678 Rapid-Cool which is the largest in dimensions they recommend (of that brand) for 2nd gen 4Runners.

They have different models of that brand; high performance, ultra cool & of course the rapid cool. I bought this one at my local O'Riellys auto parts store, it was in stock.

Yeah you can over-cool the ATF but if you get an aftermarket cooler with a bypass feature it is unlikely, especially if you keep using the radiator ATF cooler (the rad cooler will actually warm the ATF in cool weather).

I've found the model 4454 to be big enough by itself (no radiator cooler) even on 100 F days.

We rarely see freezing temps here, but it's the 110 deg days that you want to tow the jetskis up to the lake! Gonna rebuild this tranny and want it as bulletproof as possible.

Well you'll never over-cool it on a 110 degree day. :D It's the cold days you'd run that risk, of course you could make a wind block to cover the cooler in cold weather. I tried that once (covered 1/2 of the cooler) but the ATF temps quickly climbed, so I took it off.

Thermostatically controlled fan.
I ran this as my only tranny cooler. Didn't even route through the radiator after this mod.
Note that I live in S. Arizona and it gets HOT here, with day time highs in the summer exceeding 115* at times. This is the air temperature in the shade BTW, not how hot something will get sitting in the sun ;)
Never had the tranny temp exceed 200* with this setup, even when playing in the big rocks.

Hey Fred, that's pretty sweet; I take it that's the stock cooler (looks like it) but mounted differently. Could you give a little broader pic. of that & a little detail about what you got going on there? The pics make it look as though it's crammed flat against the floor-pan.

No, it's not the stock cooler.
Several companies make these. This particular one is a B&M model.
It's not mounted flat against the floor, but rather about 1" off of it using rubber isolators on the bolts.
I don't have any other photos. This was on the Jeep (TJ) that I owned for 7 or 8 years.
It's mounted at the rear, basically behind the back seats and in front of the rear axle.
I don't like mounted these aux tranny coolers in front of the radiator for a handful of reasons.
