Toyota 5 speed tranny help!!

Alright,
I have a 1986 toyota p/u 4wd with a w56 manual tranny in it. I just done a swap and this 5 speed is messed up. In neutral you can here something spinnin, im assuming the throwout bearing. Also, when you put it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and reverse it will inch forward and then stop and start grinding. It does all of this in every gear but 4th. It'll run all day in 4th gear. This also happens in 2h 4h and 4L. There is also a lot of play in the shifter both in gear and out. Any advice is welcomed and I'm just hoping it just needs adjustment and that the whole thing is not burnt out like i'm thinking.
Thanks in advance,
Ryan

Adjusted???

HA!

No, I don't think so. First off, you can't "adjust" a transmission. Secondly, it's toast.

So you can either spend a bunch of money trying to rebuild it, or just replace it. Whichever sounds like more fun to you.

HINT: Replace it. By the time you get it torn apart to rebuild it, you'll see how messed up it really is. And then you'll find out how much it'll really cost you to fix it. Shortly thereafter, you'll come to the same conclusion. That being, it's gonna be alot cheaper and easier to just go find another used one in decent shape. Usually that's the case...depends on how scarce they are in your parts though. But generally speaking, that's the better route to take.

Toyota trans do not have adjustable shift linkage, you adjust them by snap ring thickness otherwise known as rebuilding.

Does the transmission jump out of gear or stay in gear and not move?

Well, that's my advice. Take it or leave it.

Either way...you're screwed!

sounds like throw out bearing, does the sound change when you push the clutch/release? try bleeding the clutch fluid, if you dont know how do your research.

i dont know. the fact that it will move in 4th makes me lean toward not a throw out bearing. otherwise it would do it in all gears.

4th gear is straight through the transmission. it comes in through the input, down to the lay shaft and back up at the rear of the transmission. 1:1. to sounds to me like a gear/ bearing is chewed up in between that is used in other gears, but not in fourth.

look at it this way, at the very least, the transmission is coming out again to look at the throw out bearing. since its right there, out of the truck, snatch off the bellhousing and split the case at the midplate. I know its complex and tinkery, but you will be able to see massive carnage if its there. that part takes less than 20 minutes. most of your time will be spent getting the darn thing out of the truck! so check it out. if it looks bad you only lost 20 minutes and you already have the thing out for a new one.

To me it sounds like your synchros (spelling?) are shot. The same thing happened on a friends S-10 and when we tore it apart to look at it, there was just carnage in there. Needless to say he had to have a new one put in. At the very least i would remove the tranny and tear it down to have a look-see.

cluster gear carnage sounds like, your not getting all the way in gear, you said you have alot of shifter slop replace the bushing under there if the cluster isnt shot

Yes, it goes all the way in gear but won't move. And when you push in the clutch, the sound stops. I'll probably pull it out after Christmas and see whats goin on in there. Thanks for the advice!
