Total Frustration
OK, here goes my tale of woe. I bought my 93 toyota short bed 4wd, 22re project about a year ago. Pulled the engine and had it bored over (dont recall how much but basically just cleaned up bore. New pistons and rings, bearings, timing chain and gears, injectors,re-man head, water pump , fuel pump and filter etc. Truck ran great and quickly put on about 8,000 miles. Now problem I am having. When the truck warms up it has no aceleration, seems as soon as you press the gas the engine just drops out,no power, not driveable. Almost shuts off, just surges then slows, surges then slows when you hold the gas open. You can drive it and go through the gears but as soon as you try to give any gas it it falls on its face. Since the problem I have changed the ECT, changed the ECU, Changed the MAF or air flow thing, I dont really hear the injectors clicking? should that be noticeable? , I need this thing for work next week. Any ideas?:saw:

Also changed PCV, it was frozen

Check your O2 sensor. You can find a link for the service manual to give you the specs.
What is the timing set to?
I assume you have checked for codes. |
When I checked there were no codes, jsut ran it up the road again and now its not doing it but #4 cylinder is not firing, good spark, Gonna try and figure out a way to hook up fuel pressure gage.
also, o2senser checks out in spec
I put a stethoscope on the injectors and they all sound the same, but not areal audible "click"
OK, all cylinders are firing, but when you open the throttle it sputters and barely runs. Could it be the Cold start injector flooding it out?
I am back to the original problem, after it warms up you can not give it any gas or it just bogs way down, What changes after the engine is warm? it seems to run fine up till that point. Also, I unplugged the oxygen sensor and the Check engine light comes on, other than that no change in operation.

Fuel filter !!
Can`t hurt. With this ethanol gas I need to install one about once a year.:con: Remember stepping on the throttle just gives it more air not fuel Your not in the habit of driving around on fumes are you?? |
Put a ohm reader on the injectors.
Injectors are firing because if you unplug them one at a time the engine rpm changes. As for fuel filter, seems to get plenty of gas when running until warmed up, something seems to change after it gets warm
Just because the injectors are firing doesn't mean they are good. If they are low in their resistance then when you send more power to them they won't receive the full signal and not put out more fuel needed when giving more gas pedal. Check their resistance. It's easy and takes a few minutes.

Thinking about fuel filter, seems almost like it is a certain point on the acelerator where it drops out, I was thinking about throttle position senser but it checks out ok also, I changed the engine coolant senser
injecters are all 13to14 ohms
are the vacuum hoses routed correctly? have you done any vacuum leak testing?
Catalytic converter clogged?
^-- X2
Check for exhaust restrictions. Engine Vacuum test will tell you this easily. |
My guess is Fuel pump... When I first got my 93 I had to replace the pump. I replaced it with a Airtex from Advance auto. Less then 10,000 miles later I was having the same problems that your describing. I changed sensors along with the fuel filter. Still know fix. So I removed my fuel filter and had it warrantied out. That fixed me. So I'd suggest looking into that.

I think the fuel pump is ok because I have good fuel pressure (when I loosen the fitting it sprays all over) But I am gonna pull and clean the O2 senser today. My catalitic converter has no guts in it so its not that, Still thinking about fuel supply, wish there was a good place to hook in permanent gage for pressure.
