toasted ring n pinion....

well i had a loose pinion nut, i tightened it and it helped for about a day:saw: now its realllllly tight and still has all kinds of slop, guess the pinion bearing went, got the fluid drained (lots o water....:( ) and ill be pulling her tmr night, ill have pics of the carnage, but im gettin new trail creeper 5.29's setup kit, and a pinon nut for just over $300 and im gonna have her welded while shes out;) and while all this is happening i might just get my ford springs in her too:domo2: UPDATE well i finally got around to gettin that 3RD out...MORE PICS!! Another update with more pics 10/18

no toast, but the pinion bearing is shot, and looks like the pinion rode on the carrier a lil bit

looks a whole lot better dont ya think? n thanks super for suggesting a water hose, i would have never done it....i didnt have an air hose so i just used a blower to blow out the rest of the water from the tubes:bigok:

iamsuperbleeder 10-12-2009 04:15 PM

going to DD it with a welded rear?

:dunno:

BigBluePile 10-12-2009 04:16 PM

oy that sucks.

drew303 10-12-2009 05:27 PM

you can DD a welded rear. It just takes getting used to.

Goodluck with the install =) You might want to invest in a solid spacer too

x2 on solid spacer

Jay351 10-13-2009 10:26 AM

I wouldnt lincoln lock it... but whatever works :)

yoterr 10-13-2009 03:22 PM

im glad you guys said something about the solid spacer, im guessing this is prolly what happened to me, and i was wondering if it was a good idea or not, and yeah im gonna DD it with a welded rear, dont have money for a locker and im NOT doing this again so oh wells, and sooner or later im gonna get an aussie for the front ;) but yeah still no pics as i just got home and its already 8:30:( so hopefully pics tmr lol

yoterr 10-16-2009 02:53 PM

well i thought for sure ide have a nice n toasty ring n pinion, but it turns out just the pinion bearing is shot, and it looks like the pinion rode on the carrier housing a lil bit, but the gears look fine.......but i did however figure out that ive been turning these 35"s just fine with 4.10's:domo2: the way it drove i could have SWORE it had at least 4.88's or somethin, i was able to hold gears fine going up hill and i could even hold 5th at around 50 and accelerate..but anywho i gots the 5.29's on order with the solid spacer kit, and ill have the 5.29's and aussie for the front prolly around tax time:rockin:

peow130 10-16-2009 04:39 PM

Man those gears are NASTY lookin...
When i pulled my front diff from my pickup last summer my gears were very clean...
Why are yours so red and rusty?

yoterr 10-16-2009 04:56 PM

LMAO the diff didint have fluid in it.....just oily/muddy water...im kinda glade this happened cuz now i actually know what gears are n it, and i know that the fluids need changed ;) i just did my tranny n xfer case, ill get some pics of the muddy water action

iamsuperbleeder 10-16-2009 05:09 PM

whoa, dude, pics!

that's some nastey stuff man!

#1 mod to do if you're going to have that differential under water a lot, like you do a LOT in Florida, is extend that diff breather...

yoterr 10-16-2009 05:14 PM

yeah i kno...i even did it to the front....but it has this nifty little thing capped over the breather..its a plug on a spring...but uhhhh yeah i guess it dont work...i didint put it on there. and when i went to extend the breather i didint have enough to do what i wanted so i just left it....;(

annoyingrob 10-16-2009 05:31 PM

That plug on a spring IS the breather. They're all like that, or atleast they should be.

Those gears are nasty. I would just pull a 3rd from a junkyard, and clean everything out instead of driving around with all that crap on mine.

iamsuperbleeder 10-16-2009 05:33 PM

yeah I'd second the new diff, lol, but if money's tight, that one SHOULD do you fine, just clean ALL that crap outta there

yoterr 10-16-2009 05:38 PM

lol it will def have to do, had to barrow money for the gears...and yeah its gonna get cleaned out..just debating on how to do it....im gonna use brake cleaner for the 3rd to clean up the carrier n such so it can get welded, but not so sure about the housing.. i would like to get as much of the crud out of the axle tubes as possible but i dont wanna use 12 cans of BC either...

iamsuperbleeder 10-16-2009 05:45 PM

well I'm not sure I'd use a strong degreaser, cause that stuff will just leave BARE steel afterwards, and that'll rust up QUICK!!!

what would I do though?

I'd put the rear of the truck up in the air on the jack stands on the frame, then put the jack on one side of the axle and get one side as high as you possible can; get the rear suspention to flex as far as it'll go. Then, just take you garden hose and a good spray nozel, and spray all that crap outta there... the axle being flexed will help the mess drain out a little better. Then I'd probably let it sit in this wanderful heat we have here in Florida for a day :D and that should take care of any leftover water.

Just using water to rinse the mess out will leave behind an oily film on the inside of the tubes, so surface rusting shouldn't be a problem :great:

oh, and then I'd get rid of the blocks :D

yoterr 10-16-2009 05:52 PM

lmao u got me on the blocks...shoot, you see the flat springs too. ahahah if i had the extra cash i was going to order some spring hangers and some extended spring shackles and find me some 2wd ford springs to mount...but turns out i dont so yeah itll have to wait till tax time or somethin...:( i was thinking garden hose but i was scared...lmao but instead of doing all that...(i dont have a big enough jack) ill just spray both sides real good with the drain plug out.............cuz yeah my jack barely got it on the stands, and thats with a 4x4 block o_0

iamsuperbleeder 10-16-2009 05:58 PM

lol, that should work just as good :P

yeah your springs are starting to curl into an "S" shape :D

What does a solid spacer actually do? The bearing push against the races which are seated in the housing itself.
